Download Manager software

Being cursed with living in a house just outside the range of BT's fine ADSL product I am stuck with ISDN and thus require a decent download manager to handle big downloads... the only criteria for said piece of software is it must resume downloads as my freeserve connection has a 2 hour cut off...

In the past I have used Reget and Reget deluxe quite satisfactorily, and even considered purchasing a liscence the other day... until a download from Filefront (terrible FTP's, avoid like the plague) returned 50 million errors... stopped working and left an incomplete file on my hdd. This file wouldnt be moved, deleted or even clicked on without causing winXP to fall over. Being a curious kind of n00b I noticed that everytime I clicked on the incomplete file my cpu activity shot up to 100% and stayed there... explorer.exe crashed repeatedly and my only option was a reboot. When trying to del the file I get a file in use error, same when I try to move it.

Thinking that was a one off I continued to use Reget until the very same thing happened with another download...I now have two dodgy files of death on my pc :/

Soo... I looked around for Download software and found one called Kontiki.. fast... but crap features and laden with spyware :\

Last night I downloaded GetRight, after trying to avoid it for years, and thought Ill give it a whirl .. left a download of 200 megs going when I went to bed.. only to find the software had crashed after only doing 37% ..

k 2 questions then...

1. Why is winXP falling over when I try to del, move or click on these broken downloads? (I've uninstalled Reget, cleared my reg of any remnants etc)

2. Please someone recommend a download manager that downloads files and doesnt do any of the above.

Thanks.

(I scan regularly with Norton AV, and defrag regularly with O&O Defrag, OS = winXP Pro, AMD1600+, Maxtor 40gig hdd, Asus A7v266)

Streambox, sorry not got a link.

Its not got all the features of the more recognised products, but it's free and works.

Download Mage, cost free, spyware free, works on XP, and it does redials too.

In fact, the redials one day cost me £70, it kept redialling during the off-peak, and the ISP then cut it off, each call cost the minimum charge (3p ?) and it went on every 10 seconds for around 14-16 hours :(

- I've had this problem as well when downloading incomplete files. I find opening up a Command Prompt and navigating to the folder containg the file, then using the DEL command shifts it once and for all. If you aren't familiar with MS-DOS commands, then let me know the full path to your file and I'll write the commands for you.

- I've been using GetRight for years and would rank it as one of the most brilliantly useful utilities evah, along with WinZip and The All-Seeing Eye. Can't recommend any others though.
