whats the name of the thingy in the door which is operated when you turn a door knob/handle?

no the lock is operated when you turn the key, the latch is the 'thingy', as tris calls it, that is operated by the turn of a handle

so the whole barrel mechanism wotsit is a latch? i need one that is 3" long.

a barrel? that might be a cylinder? you turn it with your hand or with a key?

ahh, hang on, what door do you have, is it a pvcu/aluminium one?

Are you talking about the barrel lock like this?

If so, you can get them in Wickes/B & Q in all different lengths

no its an internal wooden door with door knobs i think i found what i need now though thorugh searching for door knob latch :)

Do you mean the bit connecting the handles then?

no man not the spindle. it is the mechanism in which the spindle rests. the spindle turns some mechaism which retracts or extrudes the thingy ma jig between the door and the door frame.

ive learned quite a bit about door mechanism wotsits this weekend. dont try and remove it by bending the plate on the side of the door, that just chips the paint.

No, take the handles off, then put the spindle back in and use that to move the cylinder out of the edge of the door, then you can get hold of the face plate
