...I've got my own ideas as to what was going on in the film...

The actual explanation has a parallel universe an artifact and Donnie who has to return that artifact to its original universe.



There's a lot more to it but I can't remember it all off hand. The DVD has the time travel book as a special feature. Read this and it will all make a lot more sense
