Aye, I'd go for the Sony as well, Technics are rebadged Panasonic, alright for the price, but Sony electronics are much better, plus it'll match your DVD heh.

Whats TT stand for?
Defo want a dd a/v reciever/amp, prolly yamaha, can I use my 2 hi-fi speakers with normal speaker wire with no plugs at the end, on it should I not buy 5.1 speakers straight away.
ps I have a samsung dvd/vhs combo, very nice, tho the stick on the remote is not that good for navigating menus. I connected the player to my pioneer hi-fi, Soo needed as my 32" sony w/s doesn't have good sound built in, unlike like my other 25" toshiba which is at least 5 yrs older

another thing: what's the difference between say, a front left 5.1 speaker and a normal stereo hifi speaker? Is there infact any diff at all, or can you mitch and match speakers when it comes to cinema sound..?

No difference really (unless you are a true audiophile) . You can mix and match speakers but buying from the same range/manufacturer would ensure tonal consistency.

I would listen to it if I were you...there is little difference between R1 and R2 on a 32" top range telly ...and I only buy R1s as they have more features and I feel I get my moneys worth from the overpriced discs...actually I bought an R2 from tesco the other day (training day) as it was identical to the R1 and was cheaper.
AS for the delivery time...christ..its like 5 days max...you've gone your whole life without the DVD...surely you can wait another 5 days?

Receivers around the £200 bracket are copious.
Take a look at www.richersounds.co.uk and you'll find some.
I've had my Yamaha RVX-795 (cost me £600 new) for about 5 years now and it's still sweet.
You can't really go wrong with Yammies at that price.

There is a lot of good advice given here. You should at least take it into consideration. You seem to have dismissed it without even thinking about what has been said.

TBH, I couldnt give a toss about all the extras on a film. I dont want to watch crappy featurettes about how they made everything work, I want to see the film!
I like Special Extended versions, though.

I appreciate the advice on the surround sound stuff, so thanks for that. And that's not what I was 'slating' ono for. If you look up again, I disagreed with him in a quite friendly manner about the region of dvd's. Simply because I asked about the surround sound aspect of home cinema, you assume I know diddly fuck about DVD's? In fact I do know a bit, which is why I went on to talk about the difference between R1 and R2. Ono's problem was that he assumed I was some dvd 'n00b' and so thought I should simply take his advice on dvd's without question. I happen to disagree about it though, I *do* prefer UK dvd's and I *do* think there is a noticeable difference in quality. I'm not suggesting that anyone change their personal preference, but all I was doing was disagreeing with some points ono made.
When it comes to the surround sound business, I do know next to nothing. As a result I am appreciative of the advice ono has given me in that area. As for the dvd's, well I don't have 300 but I've got a fair few, and have been a dvd fan for several years. I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I know my own tastes.
I only started to get a bit miffed when ono started taking the stance that I should simply bow down to his superior knowledge because I knew nothing. This, however, is not the case.
In short, sort it the fuck out you patronising lamers.

What's their delivery like for pre orders then? I know one of my likes about play.com is that they ship you the disk as soon as they get it, which in LOTR case seemed to be about 2 weeks before release date.
Certainly a cheap site, and definately going to bookmark it and use it for those DvDs where I don't absolutely, positively, NEED the DvD within a few days. And for those obscure titles Play do not stock! Hope their delivery is better than DvDBoxoffice though

DVDsoon deliveries on stocked items are about 5 working days.
Pre-orders are generally shipped about 4-5 days before actual official release date therefore you will get the disc on or just after release dates.
If you absolutely postively MUST have a R1 DVD on your doorstep about 1-2 weeks before official release date then Discemporium are the ones to go for. They are easily the fastest and use recorded delivery on all packages. Expensive though.
/I know that some people swear by Movietyme and Futurent, but MT have let me down in the past and FE have reportedly been abusive to people when stuff gets lost.
My suppliers of choice are:

Oh, and back on the original topic, my advice would be to get an amp/dvd combo that supports both DD and DTS. Then you'll never regret NOT having DTS.

TT = turntable, vinyl is cut with an equalisation curve applied called an RIAA curve, it boosts the treble and lowers the bass making it possible to actually fit audio onto the medium, the phono stage on an amp applies a reverse RIAA curve so it sounds normal.
The difference between a Front left 5.1 speaker and a normal hifi speakers, is the difference between them, if that makes sense. There's no fundamental difference between them, in that they are both a set of drivers in a box, however, coming from an audio side, instead of an A/V side, I'd always be inclined to go with a set of Hi Fi speakers simply because they are going to be more versatile than the equivalent surround intended. I'd imagine that a (decent) set of hi fi speakers will hold their value much better than dedicated surround speakers which is handy if you ever intend to upgrade.
