Can be good but I find it a bit shit...when your behind a router you encounter all sorts of problems with it. Its popular though.

I use it and it works great. Usualy get nice speeds unless it's something thats just been released and masses of people are downloading it (note: there are many legal downloads on BT so please don't assume this is warez, mods.)

I have a router and have no problem with it.. just have to set the port in the client then forward it on router :).

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ is the best client imo.

i use azureus. had problems for a long time where it would restart my router after 20 minutes. found a setting finally that sorts that out :) it is pretty fast if you download demos and stuff. but downloading 'other' stuff is always slow for me.

Used it a few times to get some legit stuff down, more and more software releases seem to be done with it
win xp SP2, the postgres 8.0 beta and some game demo's

It's great!!
Be carefull tho... you will get a lot of upload traffic. Some ISP's here (Belgium) limit upload to 1GB/month.

What I tend to do is limit my upload a bit, otherwise I end up giving full upload and my download seems to go to 5kb/s or so.. seems you can't have fullspeed up/down at same time :p

Yeah, you get throttled. Bear in mind download speeds are relative to upload ones, so if you set it too tight and find you aren't getting good speeds you know why.

I use the Linux client too, never had any probs with it, search for things while i'm bored at work then telnet into my home machine and set a load of stuff going.

I find if you limit the upload rate to 5k/s you will cap download at 100k/s. I think its basically 20x your upload.

The speeds are in no way relative in ABC at least. No problems uploading at 10kb/s and downloading at 600kb/s or so at the same time.

I think 10kb/s is the lowest you can go for uncapped download speed. Well it is for Azureus anyway.

Go lower, see if it throttles you.

It's normally good for sitting in the background downloading for a few days...

Don't expect to get anything quickly :D

The way I do it.

Use ABC or Bittornado. Set my upload connections to 2 and upload speed to 5 k/sec. I open up a higher port range than 6881-6889 and set my client to use that. Reason? A lot of ISPs are catching onto the fact that bittorrent is used a lot for warez, and as such some of the crafty so and so's have been throttling the default ports.

Usually on a large file you'll find that your upload speed will be pretty slow to start with, but as your share rating goes up you get higher up in the priority for connecting to seeds and other people and sooner or later you'll hit a few people uploading at 10-20 k/sec and you'll have your file down in no time.

Although, of course this doesn't always work and I'll spent a good 2 weeks downloading something once.

I'm trying to download something but Azureus tells me port 6881 is blacklisted. What do I do? :/

Whats your ISP? Also, what firewall are you using?

I'm on NTL, using ZA pro, make sure that firewall>internet zone security>custom>allow incoming tcp ports = 6881 - 6889 is selected.

I tried it once... had a problem with the PC crashing. Remember to limit the number of upload connections unless you have a fast CPU :p

For opensource downloads, look through university ftp sites. Normally get nice speeds from them.

I'm using ntl as well, but the normal free ZoneAlarm. I can't find anywhere to change that setting though. It lets me add IP range, address, subnet and host/site but no custom.

Back of the net! it's working. Cheers tdc/tom.

Depends on your luck with good seeds.
Sometimes you get a couple at 3-5 kb and it takes all night to download 400 mb and sometimes you get a seed at 400kb/sec :)
