Does anyone know...

... what this is about; have any answers? It's not my computer btw, this is a friend writing...

So, Internet Explorer on my computer has refused to work, claiming Error Type 2, which is supposed to mean there isn't enough memory available to run it. But I've checked and there is. I have adjusted how much memory it is suppsed to ask for... no change. If I try to work with the extensions off so I cn fiddle with things, it still won't work because the library is turned off and it can't find it, although it no longer claims to lack the memory needed. Virtual memory *is* turned on when the extensions are (i.e. by default).

Does anyone else here use IE on their Mac? Any helpful suggestions?

If the libary has gone missing, I think you are looking at one messed up system. I'm not a Mac expert, but from what I know of them, you are looking at some sort of system repair here.

Time to look out the OS X disc.

IE on the Mac is sexy though, much better than IE on Windows.;)

its a damn sight better than windows yes, but its still not up to scratch, and with MS dropping support for Mac IE now, its unlikely to get any better.
i'd used mac ie at college for ages,( it was that or NS 4.71 :(), but when i got my own mac first thing i got was safari beta and unofficial phoenix OSX build. I found safari a lot nicer to use and it fits in with the mac UI very nice and very quickly became the only browser i used on the mac.
i still stick with Phoenix on the PC, if only i could get safari on it hehe

I've not tried Safari, its worth a try.

Though I'm getting sick of suggesting alternate browsers to people. I say "Have you tried insert non-IE browser here?" and they pull this look on their face that says "You crazy hippy/commie, why would I use a non-MS product?"

heh i know what you mean :) i still use IE sometimes when a page wont load correctly in FB or Safari because the page is badly constructed, thats what IE is good at, chuck it a page thats got messed code and it'll still come up with something thats viewable. Dont get me wrong i'm not saying you're all a bunch of bill lovers and you need to change now, all i'm saying is people should give em a shot, they might be suprised :)

Now way off-topic, but I have made most of my friends use Firebird, and none of them have changed back.:)

Alright, you win!

I've been using conventional Mozilla 1.4 for a while now, waiting for them to merge Firebird in at 1.5/1.6, but I got impatient.

Did like Mookie, downloaded the latest nightly and I'm a convert. Gotta love to detailed tips and trips for things like changing the program icons :)

I'm another Firebird convert too :p It's now my default browser (somewhat oddly, perhaps) after years of using IE. That said, I believe it's still far too early for me to think about recommending it to non-technically-minded people. That said, it's only a v0.6, so there's plenty of time for it to mature. Hopefully those rumours will be stopped about it being killed off as a standalone product once Mozilla has merged and is running stably at around v1.6 onwards, it'd be a shame to see it go.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. IE5 Mac, for it's time, is one of the finest browsers ever made. It's one of Microsoft's rare unsung achievements, and although now outmoded, even rivals admit it was a very good browser, which is quite rare praise :)
P.P.S. Sorry for not even attempting to solve the original problem :(

Edit ~ Some interesting changes afoot today . . .

“People, it’s over:” AOL kills Netscape

Mozillazine reports that AOL “has cut or will cut the remaining team working on Mozilla in a mass firing and are dismantling what was left of Netscape (they’ve even pulled the logos off the buildings).” Software engineer, W3C working groups member, and former AOL/Netscape employee Daniel Glazman sums up: “Netscape hired me three years ago, AOL laid me off today.... AOL axed Netscape [at] the same time. People, it’s over. Netscape is dead. Nothing to see here.”

Mozilla lives

The Mozilla Foundation is a new, non-profit org that will serve as the home for the coordination, development, and testing of Mozilla-based browsers and applications

Wow! Aol rock at killing great stuff. They drove Peter and Justin out of Nullsoft, and then killed Mozilla.

Not entirely true, they've actually contributed a tidy sum to the new Mozilla Foundation, though that could just be a parting gift.

The new foundation has also recieved backing from some other largish names.

From the Mozilla website:
To help launch the new organization, America Online has pledged $2 million in cash to the Mozilla Foundation over the next two years. AOL will also contribute additional resources through equipment, domain names and trademarks, and related intellectual property, as well as providing some transitional assistance for key personnel as they move into the new organization.

Other industry leaders also offered their support to the new organization: Mitch Kapor, the new Chairman of the Mozilla Foundation, is making a personal contribution of $300,000, and Red Hat and Sun Microsystems are among the companies planning to continue their contributions to the Mozilla project.
