Bought a corsa 1.2 16v sxi, 04 reg about a month ago. It was serviced and MOTd. Initially it was doing about 330 miles per full tank. Ive noticed it gradually getting less and less.

So far on this fill I have done 99 miles and half the tank is gone! I dont know if its the car, the fuel or something else. Any ideas?

edit: worth mentioning that I feel the car has also lost some power.

if you feel that it's lost power too there may be a cylinder not firing.

Perhaps a poor fuel/air mixture. Check the obvious things first, like your air filter, and that your tyres are correctly inflated. Also check that one of your brakes isn't binding (wheel will be hot).

MAF can usually be tested simply by unplugging it to see how the car runs without. It'll be around the air intake somewhere.

You should also get a list of common codes for that car, and have the ECU read.

If that were the case it'd feel like a brick in a washing machine...

Are there any other symptoms?

I haven't tested this as my Corsa is too old but post #9 here should get you the error code and the first post should tell you what it means. If it's a sensor you can often solve the problem by cleaning them instead of replacing them.

Thanks for that.

Apparently I have no codes stored but was worth a bash.

A MAF/MAS is basically a bit of hot wire in the air intake. The more air goes over it, the more it wants to cool down. That's how the car knows how much air is coming in, so it can adjust the fuel/air mixture accordingly.

If the MAF is buggered, it might think there is more air than there should be, and so it increases the fuel mixture, which makes your wallet lighter.

Its usually a small sensor, located near the air filter box, air intake, somewhere. It'll be dead obvious.

Hmmm, are you sure its not the weight of the under chassis neons, big bore exhaust and sub in the boot that is taking its toll?

Just a thought :p

The car has no mods :p

I have a sub to fit from my old car but still figuring out how to do it and if the head unit has the connections.

Tom might well be right, although his description is more of the bit that does the sensing, than the MAF as a whole, which is more like a tube just before the engine between the air filter housing and the inlet manifold with a plug on the side of it.

Another high possibility is a poorly pussy, or blocked or breaking up catalytic converter.

Whatever, it should be an easy find for a half decent mechanic.

MAF sensor can be a cow sometimes, you can buy MAF cleaner but it rarely works.

Do what Tom says, unplug it and see what happens.

Sounds like the battery is incorrectly connected to me. You want to swap those two cables around.

I think you should connect the croc clamps to your nipples and touch random parts of the car with the other end of the cables! It's like automotive russian roulette!

Well, MAF sensor = £70 or thereabouts. MAF assembly, warts and all often = £200. No need to replace a plastic pipe that isn't broken :)
