I stand corrected, 7 and 1/2 hours.

The good news is that Get Right has decided to acknowledge my Tiscali dial up so I set it to auto reconnect after my 2 hour cutoff and now I can sod off out for a bit.

I think youll get a NEW copy of Half Life Generations for less than 20quid, but then youve got a whole load of downloading to do to get all the patches etc.

Have fun;)

thats the main problem of HL now. too many patches and the upgrades and stuff are getting to large for us poor 56k'ers to handle

That and the fact it's so old. The Networking is piss poor. It lies somehwere between Qw and Q2 in terms of data transmission, but it has alot more data to send, hence it feels nowhere near as smoothe.

I always heard HL was renowned for its netcode. It is certainly one of the few engines that allowed decent games on my old 56k. Never played QW or Q2, though so can't comment on that. Q3-based games seem to need broadband.

The HL engine is showing its age very badly these days. The DoD team have done duperb things which have never been done before in that engine. Personally I just wish they'd used the UT engine to create a truly beautiful game. But then it wouldn't be anywere near as popular. (Currently DoD is played by more people than UT and all its mods combined.)

Well, i've never doubted that the HL prediction code is 2nd to none, infact i've been one of the rpime supporters of it on the BW HL board.

However, prediction code, and networking are 2 differant things. In Q3, even on my 56k, the game never feels laggy. Everything moves at full speed, and is easy to play as offline. Yes, i have to lead targets, but that's just a skill, or maybe even just a habbit, rather than a hindrance. HL however, lets players allways aim directly at the target, but suffers from lag spikes, jerky play, and bendy bullets.

Q2 and QW feel very smoothe, and i would say the HL networking is fairly unchanged from these 2 games, however, the HL engine is alot more powerful, and so alot more data is sent. I believe Q3 now uses uber-compression, which means an ISDN rate of 8000, is actually sending 11000bits.

HL just can't cut it.

Actually, RTCW could be classed as a Q3 mod, as could MOH, but the main differance between mods, and games based on other games, is that RTCW and MOH use a customised Q3 engine.

Why not? As i meant to imply in my post, i believe most poeple wouldn't class it as a mod due to the fact that the word `mod' has an established meaning, even though both games are infact modifications of the Q3 engine.

cos im a fool to pay money for something i could get free. like people buying cs retail , even though for cs it would take em a week to download it

I got it for free.

Went into a shop near me, wrote down the CD Key, ripped the sticker off and threw the box into a bin.
