hi there,

i am a filmmaker from berlin, germany. i am currently preparing a tv documentary about computer games and would like to learn more about game clans and cultures. i ran across your site and was wondering if anyone can help me with a little bit of background information on clan life, battles and cultures.

do clans just connect online for gaming or do they meet offline as well ? are there specific recruitment strategies ? what strategies do you have for recruiting ? do clans have a distinct philosophy or rules of conduct? how serious is competition in this scene ? is there a lot of rivalry and jealousy and how is it acted out ?

my program will be produced and aired in 2003. so i am still in the research process. i would be itnerested to speak to people in the US, Europe and Asia.

cheer. i hope you can tell me a little bit more.

best mo

This is a community site - meaning that the thousands (?) of people that visit it are members of various clans, for various games. As such your inquiry is incredibly wide-reaching - you're going to get wildly different answers to all your queries based on who you ask.

If I were you, I'd compile some kind of basic survey and post the link here, asking common questions that you're interested in (eg the ones in your post are a good start) - you'll get a lot of high-level feedback that you'll be able to sort through and make sense of. And if you need to go further, conduct mini-"interviews" with selected people, either over IRC or through email - that way you'll get some more indepth research.

You might want to post in the various games forums for specific information about how clans pick new recruits. Personally Ive been doing this since 1995.
