i got a problem atm that im pretty worried about, a problem that ive had for over a year but is now gradually getting worse.

maybe i made a mistake, but i went reading nhs direct and bbc medical advice thingys which say i probably need a bloodtest to get it checked out.

thing is, if i request one is the doctor obliged to give me one? ive had probs with doctors in the past trying to make them listen.
i do have a lot of symptoms for this particular problem and im not sure i will feel at ease unless i have a blood test to check it out completley.

Doctors can be a pain in the arse.. my GP is terrible and i always request a differnt GP to see me...

Can you hint at the problem? some things are covered by the NHS some are not...

For example... my food intollorance problems i had to pay to get looked into myself... the NHS just wont touch it.

seems to me it maybe a form of anaemia, which i have found can only be checked with a blood test.

btw, im not a hypocondriac or anything :) the problems started about 2 years ago and recently got worse. i did try vitamin B12 and iron supplements etc which didnt really help much.

I work in medicine.

Self diganosis is quite dangerous - some would say NHS direct is even more dangerous ;)

I don't think they are obliged to offer blood tests, but they are obliged to listen (and are tested in GP training on their ability to do so)

They are best placed to offer advice based on clinical signs and symptoms.

If you feel your doctor is not listening you can ask to see another doctor or even register with a different practice.

Edit after seeing your last post - if they think it is anaemia they will certainly offer a blood test - however as it is an iron deficiency if iron tablets didn't work then it may well not be anaemia.

if you go in there and tell the doctor exactly what you think is wrong and why you believe this and say that you just want a blood test to give you peace of mind im pretty sure they will do it, just be straight with him and if he says no then ask him to diagnose what is wrong with you.

Go on baby, dont take no crap!

Vitamin B12s uptake from oral consumption is very poor. If you have a real B12 deficiancy (like some types of annemia) then youll need a course of injections (something like 5 over a week to start with then one every 3 months..), oral supplements wont do it unless your just a bit vegan with a naff diet ;)

My advice is go talk to your GP, if they have half an ounce of sense they will refer you to your local hospital for a proper blood test.

My experience with doctors is that they try and get you out of the door as quickly as possible, you tell them whats wrong, and they have the prescription printed out before you can tell them if anything else is wrong, let alone them asking if anything else is wrong.

Sounds like Britain has some shit doctors :p
not only britain... A lot of dutch doctors are thesame way aswell. I now enlisted at an anthroposophic practice and though you may or may not agree with their alternative way (they use a mix of classic medicine and alternative medicine like homoeopathy or creative groupcourses whatevernot) but they really listen to the patient and they really take their time. This sometimes does make you wait half an hour or more orso after your appointment time because some client took more time than they anticipated but it goes both ways. Can't have the one without the other :)
