I'm trying to edit a .doc file that isn't set to read only under properties, but when I open it I'm unable to write to the file as it's for some reason opening as read-only despite being unchecked, I'm using the latest open office (3.3.0) and the file is saved as a 97/2000/XP .doc, any ideas?

Maybe someone set it to read-only with a password protect?

Are you opening it off of a CD or something (read only media)? Or it might be open already by another instance of open office which will have locked it for editting. Otherwise, what G said probably.

Would seem unlikely, it's an application form that I got sent via e-mail

In that case it'll be set to be read-only from within Word by the end user.
