No they don't.

Scholarship turned down because even though my mother works but earns a small amount, she is unfortunately not unemployed and living off the state!

Ahh well.

Yeah, you're all grown up, start acting like one and stop living off your mother! :p

They won't let me apply as an independent student so I have to apply using my mothers' details =/

And I'm not scrounging off the state, as the scholarship has nothing to do with the state!

Unfortunately it is very difficult to become classed as an independant student in the UK until you turn 25.

For my case, I turned 25 on september 26th last year but because the academic year started on the 1st, I was still classed as being under the independant student boundary for the whole year... even though I was technically a mature student.

One of my sisters, having left home at 17 started her third year at 22 having not lived at home for 5 years l income assessed by my parents.

My other sister, having had a child and lived away from home since she was 18, did her A-Levels at 22 (had to pay, the amount based on my parents again) and had reports, parent evenings which were mandatory so she decided to have them issued to her son, heh. Even during her second year at med school, at the age of 25 with a son, living with a partner for a number of years, she was still having to become income assessed based on my parents incomes...

The way around it? You have to acknowledge on the forms that you no longer have any contact with your parents and if you're investigated and they find out you lied, you've broken the law and chances are you wont be able to continue your course... it's not worth the hassle for an alright sum of money versus a black spot on your record counting against you in further education. Not sure about any criminal record implications, maybe one of the lawyers on here could shed some light as I suppose it's technically fraud.

Horrible, horrible rules but at the same time, it does stop people coming from families with a large total income, sponging off of money which they don't necessarily need.

Think yourself lucky though Bugz, although my parents incomes are alright, we had some tough times (and unlucky starting years) when myself and one of my sisters were at uni resulting in £24k debt for myself and I think £50k debt for my sister. ;)

edit:Out of interest, what is the title and what are the credentials required for the scholarship?

Yea Kire, it would be a criminal offence under the new(ish) Fraud Act.

"A person commits fraud if he dishonestly makes a false representation, and intends, by making the representation to make a gain for himself or another, or to cause loss to another or to expose another to a risk of loss."

I think would be the relevant bit. It's an either way offence, probably just a fine at the magistrates court for this type of thing *shrug* no idea if they would bother, they'd probably just kick you out and cut your grant.

How dare you call Trem a southerner? Do not associate him with us, he's clearly a mental northerner.

Fuck right off it is. I'm calling it the abyss. There is nothing north of the m25 except The North, and nothing south of Boro except the South. There for, Stoke and Trem do not exist.

While I totally agree with erasing Stoke, I think Birmingham deserves to stay. Can we not just replace Stoke with a big lake or something? :)
