I loved Q2 as much as the next guy but........things have moved on.

Why are you peeps still playing it??

Try CS, it rocks big time.

Ono, forgive me for this
but FUCK OFF, ok? People will play what they want to play, I prefer q2 over any other game at the minute, and will do for quite a while.

People will always play the games they want. Not what people tell them to play.
why do you think there is still a massive following for QW ?

Ono wasn't being insulting, but he could put it across better and tried this instead

"What is it about Q2 that keeps you coming back for more after all this time?"

Without starting another long thread about the merits of each game. I'd say this, I've tried CS a couple of times. I DO like it. But seeing as it is based on HL engine is a BIG BLACK mark against it right away. Shame the Unreal engine or Quake Engine hadnt been used instead. It would've made it more fluid and more playable online blah blah blah.

Edit:

BTW, Good point Kryten, I started playing QW recently again. Gad, sooooo fast. but very enjoyable.

Most people are pretty decent. It's just that some of them end up looking like Prats online

NO OFFENCE INTENDED CHAPS!

Q2 introduced me to online gaming and it is regarded by me as a classic. Fair enuff, if you still think it beats all the newer games......, but I played it again recently and rather like GP2 to GP3........

the HL engine IS based on the quake engine.... dunno how they fucked up the netcode so bad, as qw arguably still has the best netcode of any game (especially when using qizmo compression). Supposedly recent patches have made hl much more playable....

personally i still play qw cos for me its the best multiplayer game, but i dont begrudge ppl moving onto other games with a bigger community, or perhaps that style of gameplay is more suited to them. It's quite amusing to see current q2 players going thru the same thing as qw players did a cppl years ago, being put down for playing an older game :) i think we will see less of this as time progresses as the FPS scene is soo much more diverse nowadays, in the past it was basically duke or quake, then quake or q2 for a while, but now theres a lot of FPS with reasonable followings - qw,q2,q3,hl,unr,ut,cs etc etc. in fact the quake series is prolly the first in gaming in which a significant number of players have prefered earlier versions over the sequels,

Actually I disagree with that further...

The HL engine is based on the Quake 1/2 engine, it's a modified hybrid of the two. The netcode was originally terrible, this is also true.

The new netcode, since HL v 1.1, is in my opinion the best for any game. I mean by this that you can play with virtually any quality of connection and still get a very good game in. A faster connection does help, but in HL a person with a 250 ping can compete with an LPB. This is not possible in Q2 (assuming both players are IDENTICALLY skilled). I don't know about QW.

I played CS on my modem over the whole of the summer, with an average ping using RHA of about 200. I still managed to compete with the best, snipe people just as well (all weapons in CS are hitscan remember). Being back on ISDN means I find it easier to rush and play up close, but I still find myself being sniped by HPWs.

In CS (dunno about HLDM/TFC) you just point and shoot. Want to hit someone in the head? Aim for the head. In Q2 with hitscan weapons it is a necessity to lead the target and guess where they're going to be. This is a sign of bad netcode.

Q3 provides the most remote netcode of any game in my opinion, especially due to the laggy rubber banding and bouncing when touching other players. Q2 was best for this, that I admit. I no longer really like Q2 as a game, but I have fond memories of playing it for 2+ years.

in my experience one of the main problems with lagged connections in q2 was the lack of pushlatency, meaning as stated below u have to lead with hitscan weapons. while this is still the case to some extent in other games like qw (and presumably recent HL versions), its much less apparent. qw on isdn feels as good as q2/q3 on lan to me. of course client side prediction has much more potential error on shitty modem connections, maybe halflife has the edge when u start getting into the 200 ping range. having said that, latency may seem less of an issue in CS due to the slower pace of game - i havent tried client-server doom ports online but i would imagine modem would be hell in a game with that kind of speed, regardless of netcode quality.

Yup, I shoulve said quake3 engine. I already knew what Hl was based on, u prolly know the debate wherever you go

"HL was baed on q1 engine. No!! It ws based on Q2 engine!"

And so on.....

Personally I find the animations a big step back. The netcode is good for modemers yes, but what do the ppl who shelled out for isdn or cable supposed to think? Are they happy with this?

Quake3 can be set up as connection based, to only allow hpb's onto the server etc.... which certainly helps placate
those who argue that there should be a level playing field despite what you pay for the privilage.

Guess they could go and play something else, but there you go.

Yep, I am :)

As I say, a fast connection is not necessary, but it still helps, especially to have a smoother game with none of the lagouts that modems suffer in all games.

It is frustrating being 'rubber banded' back round corners by HPWs as well as LPBs in CS, but seeing as us LPBs have been doing that to HPWs in Quake for the last 5 years, I think they have some licence to be annoying...

Pushlatency certainly helps, but the advanced lag compensation for both movement and weapons in CS is one step above the old pushlatency command, to be honest.

You say that you can use server commands to limit connections to HPWs only in Quake3. This is all very well, but my point is you don't need this in CS - the playing field is so level already :) Added to that everyone on the server will have a 200 ping anyway :D

CS does have its drawbacks, and it's not for everyone. I remember a friend complaining that it was just all guns - differently powered and accurate guns, but still all guns. No slow projectile weapons or anything...

I think one of the reasons I like CS is that it helps if you make it look as nice as possible. One of the things which turns me off Q3 is the fact that you need to set r_picmip 7 or whatever to be able to keep up with the l33t players :/ I don't like the Q3 lighting engine either, the radiosity from qrad in CS is much more like Q2, which I still think has the best lightmap effects in any game.
