DNS server updates?

HI

Can Ted or DB's or somebody tell me what time the BW DNS servers update?

My web server has been down for 42 hours now, went down 10pm 2 June just as I was uploading.

Anyway now my hosts are shifting the blame to InterNIC and my ISP's.

Here is what they say:-

"Our servers are up and working fine, it is a problem with the InterNIC. We have contacted them and they say the changes have been done so it should be okay in the next root nameserver update.
It really depends on your ISP's nameservers as to how quickly you can see your site again."

It's true what they say, their servers are working fine, NOW!!, and I know if ip's change it can take up to 24 hours for your ISP's to catch up. BUT 42 HOURS THATS A JOKE!!.

I got all my hosted sites moaning at me, I cant get any work done (ftp down), nobody can connect to their GrimNoir e-mail accounts, AKK!!!

Get this it used to say on my host's site "99% uptime guaranteed", hmmm seams to have been deleted that bit.

AK!! That rant sounded like it was partially aimed at BW, its not. I just want to know generally how often isp's update their DNS servers. So I can tell if my hosting service is talking out of their botties.

Thanks

Grim

BTW it'a now been down about 52 hours, I would post the url of my crap hosts, but that would be wrong wouldn't it

The Global Name servers are updated once every 12 hours. This is a function carried out automatically.

Individual nameservers (like the one's ISPs and hosting services use) are again, updated every 12 hours, or rather - just after the Global NS update (since every other NS takes its feed off them).

It is not unreasonable to expect a NS or IP change to take anything up to 72 hours. interNIC was recently tendered out to NetworkSolutions in Maryland, a company appointed by the US Information Technology Council and the WWW consortium to implement the new IP6 protocols - there have been massive delays across the board sinceNetwork solutions took over, especially on top level domains (.com, .net and .org)

Personally, I would contact your ISP. Confirm your prime and secondary NS information, whether you have a shared or sole IP, and then use WHOIS to see when you're domain information was last *altered* (not updated, since that happens every 12 hours also).

And of course, don't forget. Network Solutions runs over 4 billion domain names. Things do get lost once in a while

(On a side note - you're not with mistral are you?)

Thanks for the info Brit. You were bang on the mark with 72hours I finally got access again on the 72nd hour.

As it happens they didn't just lose my domain they lost the DNS server the server farm uses, go figure!

Thanks again

Grim
