I have a film, i wanna put it on my portable external usb hard drive so i can take it to work and watch it.

How do people extract this data onto their machines? i dont need a dvd burner cause im not putting it on dvd, i just need to extract the data into .avi or .mp3 etc

I noticed when you see these laying around the net people have DIVX in the bottom corner so im guessing you use that some how?

as in you have a retail DVD film, and you literally just want it on a hard drive to watch at work?

well, there are quite a few ways and methods to go about it, but as long as you sufficient hard drive space you might as well extract the DVD and leave its format intact to save yerself fiddling with compression.

you can accomplish this by using software such as "DVD Shrink" which you can download from:

http://www.dvdr-digest.com/software/dvdshrink.html

using that program you can extract the film from the DVD to a folder on your (removable) hard-drive, keeping everything like menus intact etc. then take the hard drive to work, and use your favourite DVD player software to open the DVD from the folder on the hard drive.

you can ofc take further steps to convert the file to another codec, like DivX for example to reduce the filesize by large amounts. But this WILL take more effort to get right, and take alot longer to do depending on the speed of your computer.

hope this helps.

There's lots of software for this on Sourceforge.net (open source community: free software without limitations) (Think the one below is best there.. haven't tried it):

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdripomatic

I'm not using it myself, but the description says it's converting to XviD (But you can download that codec here: http://download.divxmovies.com/XviD-1.1.0-30122005.exe ) and install it, so Windows Media Player can read/run it.

Or something freeware: Here's a list of programs:
http://www.xvcd.com/sources.htm

goodluck :)
