I've just installed this on my game setup:

http://www.techconnect.nl/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1155

On this setup (PIV 2Ghz, TI4600, Dets 41.09), my 3DMark 2001 has dropped from 11,500 'ish to 7000 !. However, when I go into games, there is a marked improvement in performance - I can now run BF1942 at 1280x960 with no jerko-vision - MoH Omaha Beach is now smooth as a proverbial at 1280x1024.

Proves the point that benchmarking can be misleading.

Thats interesting tbh. Has anyone else used it ?

I've installed it, no idea of benchmarking differences as I don't do that, but everything seems to look slightly crisper on my Radeon 9700

Well the text on bf1942 is a bit buggered again... not quite as bad as it was before with AA on though.

Seems a lot crisper... the fsaa effect actually looks better now.

Has your benchmark figure decreased Leggie ?

I don't benchmark ... but game performance hasn't decreased.

Do you have q3 installed and patched to 1.32 Leggie ? If you do, what score do you get on timedemo ?
If you've not done it before, go to demos, bring down console and type timedemo 1 , then click on demo.

Err yeah, but we have similar pc's, and if he has a set up for q3 similar to mine we can see the difference cant we ?

OGL has no relation to DirectX, this is a thread about the new DX9 not OGL so perhaps I've lost track or you've changed the subject.

No, I can actually see a point, if OpenGL performance is similar then the differences in scores between the two in D3D (one being DX8.1 and one being 9.0) is comparable.

My point exactly Xavier, or are you just being deliberately obtuse Embattle ?

Sorry I still don't see much point, there is also the fact that very little improvement in terms of benchmarking/framerates is normally seen between DXs.....a new DX tends to add features, not speed.

Oh well this obtuse person will leave you too your discussion.

Just a couple of questions on this subject:

Wont we have to wait for drivers for our gfx cards that works more efficiently with dx9 before we can get full benafits or see increased performance ?

Also wont 3dmark 2001 be messed up now as I always thought it was all about dx8 ?

Dunno about the first Moon, but my in-game performance on MoH, BF1942, SoF2, Crimson Skies is definitely better.

3DMark has dropped from 11,500 to 7000, but guess this is because it is optimised for DX8 - new version due soon iirc.

Hm, had a quick game of Battlefield before, and noticed it finally stopped juddering at the start of the game... i thought that was coz i only had 256mb memory....... seems to have been DX... ah well :p

True support for a DX9 (API) is done at three other levels:

Hardware
Driver
Software (Game)

The GF4 Ti for example only supports DX8.x and thus new drivers won't really do much regarding DX9.

A crude way to look at DX9 is that it is DX8 with extra bits bolted on to it, these extra bits provide new features such as Pixel Shader 2.0 and Vertex Shader 2.0 but some of the older files get reworked so they may work a bit better resulting in slightly better frame rates etc.

In most cases the 3DMARK2001 score shouldn't be effected because DX9, like previous DXs, are backwards compatible.

Now if only the lazy game makers put some flamin effort in and used these features... :(

My findings so far :

No performance hit in openGL applications (bearing in mind they still use directsound, don't they? - q3, wolfenstein etc) - GTA 3 is a helluvalot better : used to need to play in 1024x768x16 : can play in 1280x1024x32 without jerking now.

for the records, amd xp 1800 @ 1633mhz, gf4 ti4200 unclocked atm, 512mb ddr, win XP

I think we're going to see alot more dx 9 games than proper dx 8 games, as it's more comparable with dx 7, which works alot better with all gfx cards.
