Direct X problem

I'm having a bad day... I've tried re-installing directx 8.1b, nvidia's 28.32 drivers (i've downloaded the 30.82's but they won't even install) - when running dxdiag & doing a test of Direct 3D Acceleration, the one using DX7 interfaces works fine, then I get this :

Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

Any ideas ??
