Direct Draw & Windows XP

I've tried installing Quake 2 on Windows XP, the setup exe, auto launches direct x installation, a box comes up detailing what versions are installed. It reports that direct draw is not installed. If you click to install direct x, it flashes for a second and disappears.
Ultimately, it means the game won't install.
Whats the deal with direct draw and windows xp?
Is it a redundant technology?
I recall, you can just copy the files from the cd and run the game, i guess i'll just have to do it that way.

Copy it, even if you get past that DDraw thing you'll have an issue with the location.

Hi d0nk3h

Unfortunately it seems Quake II has it's fair share of problems on Windows XP based machines, but from what I can tell, these mostly occur after installation. You may want to try running the setup utlity in Compatiblity Mode (right-click the setup file > properties > compatibility > run this program in compatibility mode for ...), but to be honest, I really don't think that will help.

If you can just copy the content straight from the CD, fair enough. You may have to edit some of the paths in certain files, though.

Other than that, I really don't know what to suggest :( id's site only offers the latest patch, but obviously that won't help with install issues.

Good luck
