Me needs some help

So i got some money together that i had been saving for a while to get myself a new graphics card. So i decided to go for the geforce 6800 ultra.

so the card arrives, and i do everything by the book and it all is looking good, until i try to play ANY game...

when u start any game, you can hear the sound in the background as the manufacturers logo's etc appear on screen. But as soon as the game reaches the Title screen with "new game" "load game" etc the pc freezes and i have to turn it off at the power.

So i thought it was something to do with the drivers, so i procedded in trying at least 15 different drivers, none of which worked, i tried older versions of directx and worked my way up to the latest release, still no luck.

I read that maybe it was something to do with the refresh rate of my monitor, and maybe that the game was runnin at refresh rates my monitor could not support. i made sure the monitor could handle the refresh rates in each game i tried, and even tried 3 different monitors just to be sure.

So then i thought, ill run dxdiag, direct draw tests all passed, but when i went to the direct 3d tests, the first one with the spinning cube and the direct x logo, was just a spinning cube, with a messed up texture covering it, with the subsequent 2 tests crashing my pc, and having to switch the power off again.

Anyone know how to fix this?

:(

I have no clue on how to help you with this, only a tip for other players; don't buy the newest cards just released! They almost always have compatiblity (sp?) problems.. wait 2 months and it should be working fine everywhere :)

Edit: try downloading NOT the latest nvidia drivers, but something like 53.03 (if still available), the newest gimped a GF 5900 XT aswell with some games.

Hmmm, id try :

Format and reinstall of OS. Making sure you have the latest mobo / gfx drivers and DX9b.

If you have a via chipset, make sure you are running the latest hypers and that AGP 3.0 support is installed.

Restore your bios to default settings and then start again to make sure you dont have any settings that optimised your previous cards performance, but could cause problems with this card. I.e that is not set to 2X Oo.
My friend had an AGP 4 card running in a 8X configured slot which resulted in massive texture loss in games...(i know yours is 8x, i mention this to highlight how bios configurations can cause problems)

Try your new spangly card in a mates PC. If he has the same problem with it, it could well be you have a dud card.

I'd even try reseating your GFX card just to eliminate that possibility, but you may as well try this after you have reinstalled it in another/friends computer.

Also, it might be worth emailing your motherboards/Nvidia's/Gfx cards customer support to see if there are any known issues with your rig's setup.

I'd also make a note of your machines spec in here too, i.e mobo model, gfx card model/manuf., ram, cpu etc... it helps in fault finding :O

Hope this helps..
