Direct 3D problems take 2

I posted here a few weeks ago about a problem with my pc bombing out or reseting with games based on direct3d such as gta3, freelancer etc

Someone suggested onboard sound as an issue, i tried a few direct3d games with it disabled, and it appeared to work, joy i thought so i went out and bought a SB Live 5.1 card to try it out.

No joy however! as its still doing it! I can't play freelancer and its quite annoying :(

Any further ideas? Come pay day the end of May i am pretty much going to start over again its pissing me off that much.

um...look in your games audio control setup thing and see if there's a checkbox or something lables EAX on/off and make sure it's off. I had much the same problem as you with unreal2 and some other games. turn off EAX and all is peachy :)

You could try turning down the level of sound acceleration, or various other settings, in dxdiag.

Well i tried Freelancer, couldnt find anything to do with EAX audio but did noticed 3d surround sound so tried disabling that, no joy.

I did lower the sound acceleration in dxdiag also but it still bombs out :(

Hello :)

There are a great many known sound issues with Freelancer discussed in this knowledge base article. You may wish to try some of things it recommends.

Kind Regards

looked for you this is what i found

As usual, microsoft are a bit vague with their diagnosis.

I tried to follow the other link on that page and found .this

The reason I asked if you had enabled onboard sound last time, was because i had the same trouble with a soundblaster live while playing delta force 2 and blackhawk down. I changed the memory from 2 x 256 meg sticks to 1 512 meg stick and upgraded the board (for freee, thanks europa) to the k75sa with onboard lan which cured the problem

Yeah i found similar links when checking, thanks though.

I checked elites website but didn't really find much in the way of help, im running out of patience with it now :(

Guess i'll start testing hardware over the weekend.

Your not the only one  thanks for the help though.

I should have a spare few hours tonight so i will try then.

What gets me though and still has some doubt in my mind, is why i can play games like quake 3 without any problems?

Q3A primarily utilises OpenGL to render its scenes, and hence does not rely on Direct3D in any way. It doesn't help you, I know, but it does explain why some games, like Q3A, can run fine whilst other games, utilising Direct3D, consistently fail.

It could be pretty much anything judging by all these replies! :D Seriously, though, my guess would be that it's something on the software side, be it drivers, BIOS or something of that nature.

If something was physically wrong with the hardware itself, then it would be unlikely you could even play games (say something were physically wrong with your graphics card; it probably wouldn't make a difference whether the game utilised OpenGL or Direct3D, neither would work; software issues, however, can mean your hardware is fine but that something specific goes wrong, in this case Direct3D games).

I know this doesn't help, but I'll keep thinking about what it can be :)

Kind Regards

Having just checked Microsoft's site, it seems the 'page_fault_in_nonpaged_area' fault is known.
Microsoft
Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause [this error]
Apparently, although there seem to be a variety of solutions suggested across other sites reporting this error, restarting your computer in Safe Mode, removing the display adapter from the control panel, uninstalling all associated drivers, and restarting normally, updating your drivers when prompted, may help fix the problem. Whether this will work, however, I'm not sure, as it doesn't seem to be addressing the cause of the problems, but I suppose it's worth a try.

Kind Regards

As a suggestion, why not try removing your video/sound drivers and DirectX, and then starting from a known stable base (DirectX8.1 and WHQL Detonators/sound for e.g.).

You can de-install DirectX using:

http://www.freewebs.com/firecat/

I've used a previous version of this to remove a beta DirectX release, and it worked fine.

Might also be worth using something like this to make sure you don't have Detonator remnants on your setup:

http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/

Worth a try ?
