I have the iphone 3g. My phone is due for renewal in 10 days. Do i just go with what i know and get the 3gs or go for the palm pre or something else?

3gs may be ok but i know i will have felt i havent really had an upgrade and there is nothing wrong with my 3g iphone apart from little scratches here and there

Save your cash, don't get an upgrade, go on a sim only rolling contract with o2, you keep your phone that you are happy with, and get lots of minutes and texts.

i could basically save £25 a month on a rolling contract. I dont even use 1200 minutes a month so 600 would be fine ( i have another mobile which i use more)

Tariffs - O2 pay monthly SIM only tariffs

I think i may do that, though for the past 3 years ive tried to cancel one phone and always ended up getting a new phone. At least with a rolling contract i can stop it whenever. Its the o2 one i would rather keep, ive had that number for over 10 years now

You can keep your number anyway when you swap to another provider.

Sparx, one consideration, and it is an important one; if you go onto an o2 rolling contract, you cannot then transfer your number back to a normal contract with o2. Silly ofcom rules.

Maybe haggle with o2 first, say you are happy to commit to a 12 month contract but want a £35 contract with a 40% discount, works out to around £20 a month. Ask for free net and wifi. As you are not upgrading phone they should give you that as a minimum, talk to disconnections though.

Here is what you do.

Phone 202 from your iPhone. (That's O2 Customer Services)
Say that you want your PAC because you're thinking of changing network. I will bet you get put through to another department (Retentions).
Once you're onto Retentions, they should try to give you a decent deal to keep you as a customer.

You could take out a new contract with a 3GS, but play a little hard to get. Don't just accept the first deal they offer you unless you really like the sound of it. For example, I managed to get my old Xperia on a £35/month tariff reduced by 30% a month to make it £25/month for 600mins/1000txt/unlim.net.

If you take out a 12 month £20 Simplicity contract, you *should* get £150 credit towards your account because you're not taking out a new handset. You get a decent number of text and minutes and you get a free bolt-on as well (I recommend Mobile Web).

It's all to do with how cheeky you're prepared to get. If you don't ask, you won't get. :)

I'd only had 2 contracts before that with O2 so I didn't want to push it.
Next time in July, I'll be going for the throat. :)

That used to be the case, with orange and the others getting in on the iphone that is likely to create competition for O2 hence the suggestions of going through to the retention department to haggle.

He won't be on an iphone contract anymore. He is up for renewal, he can get whatever he wants and keep his mobile. He could get his iphone unlocked and use it with his t-mobile contract if he wanted, and get a o2 upgrade.

not rly, as apple have sent the phone companies a fixed tariff pretty much which is why when you see the tariffs of all the suppliers they look pretty much exactly the same.
