A billion quid prize is on offer if anyone can figure out how to capture carbon and store it - just from the UK government. That's an unbelieveable amount of cash for a science prize.
CCS is a cornerstone of government policy. It's one of the reasons rolled out regularly for not investing in renewable energy - "we're going to capture and store carbon dioxide - we can keep burning coal and gas".
Of course, CCS doesn't actually exist, and as it turns out it's a harder challenge than the politicians thought (unsurprisingly, scrubbing CO2 is very expensive - enough to jusitfy full-on renewables investement and then some).
A billion quid shows how much the government is relying on science to fix their idiot problems. It's desparate.
