Derren Brown skepticism - The Heist

Today I watched the Heist, I've watched several of the other show's, but today I was watching with a completely skeptical view as for some time I've been trying to understand what he is doing.

If you ask a magician these days are they any difirent too old magicians, they will tell you that old magicians tried to pass off their tricks as the result of having magical powers, these days knowing nobody believes in magic they just take the route of being open that it is simply a slight of hand trick, or a numbers trick, etc etc. I believe Derren's techniques are more similar to the old style. He trys to pass off his 'tricks' as the result of psychological abilities, when infact they are simply 'tricks', like camera tricks, etc.

A few things I noticed in "the heist", and I'd love to confirm them, but I dont have the show recorded so I can't verify it. In the scene's where each of the last four are walking up the street when the opportunity of robbing the truck comes up, the first person, the girl I forget her name takes the gun from the back of her trousers, the typical gangster place to keep a gun. Let me ask you this, if your carrying a replica gun, down a London street, and your not a gangster, wheres the last place you want to keep this very real looking gun? "Sorry officer, its just a imitation gun I'm carrying around for a TV show, I've also got a imitation sword on my back, and a rubber knife in my sock". Really it was just a simple acting mistake!

Second, the third guy, simply put, when hes caught and with Derren, theres only one word for what I saw.. overacting.

The last guy, probably the only non actor. I was so annoyed when he didnt go for the bait because he was in a shirt so couldnt take the gun from a pocket, I was hoping he would pull his gun from a violin case or something..

What I'm trying to say is, even if Derren Brown can condition people to be bank robbers with his techniques, isn't he making his TV show the hard way? Like, wouldn't it be so much easier to hire out a few actors, and get them to pretend they are absorbing all these subliminal messages, and then just pretending they were taken over by these feelings to just rob the van. I mean, isn't he making his TV show the hard way by relying on his techniques?

Basically, in my opinion, Derren Brown is a regular old trickster, camera tricks, actors & props, and just pretends its phsycological conditioning. Why? Because evidently todays people will belive this shite far more easily than pretending he's got magical powers.

Long post, bringing nothing new to the old "don't believe" genre.

I wouldn't deem it as "fake", before i've been "derrened".

Just like hypnotism, it's something you can't be a 100% sure, real or fake wise, before it's happened to you.

It's easy to judge from a couch.

I do partially believe in what you're saying, and I also believe that people can be 'conditioned' to react to things differently to what they would normally do.

I'm a great fan of Derren's, regardless of whether he use actors or not. As much as you don't believe in what he does, you still sat there watching the programme, so if nothing else, he's supplied an hours entertainment which, lets be honest now, was way better than re-runs of Friends or some other crappy repeat that Channel 4 like to do...

I'd like to see if Derren could condition me to give up smoking and lose some weight, cause I'm a lazy fat bloater with no willpower, and I'd rather have Derren f***ing about with my mind than that other hypnotist fella with the glasses..whose name I can't remember cause he's such a nonce...

My mate tried to give up smoking for years. Went to a hypnotist and hasnt had a cig for 3 years.

I was hypnotised once, on holiday when I was 16, but was the just the usual crap, where he made me look a right cnut on stage.

if i had Derren Brown's "powers" i'd be setting up a meeting with Bill gates to get him to gimme all his cash instead of making shite progs for ch4.

if he could do everything he claims he can he'd be ruler of the world.

Maybe, just maybe, he has a consience. It appears he's made enough money to retire, and I remember something he stated before that he used his 'tricks' to pull the laydies and was banned from many a casino in his youth.

Maybe he doesn't want to rule the world as A) It'd be too easy. and B) He's not Hitler.

The most obvious clue that this is entirely staged is the fact that this would not have been granted permission to be carried out. Police do cooperate with filming dramas by clearing streets and standing by etc. but only for dramas where all the participants are actors or crew. They would not be able to consent to a stunt that poses a real danger to members of the public (which the participant allegedly were) without their prior knowledge and consent. Had this been real and the 'participants' truly conditioned to execute an armed robbery, there would be genuine risk of lasting damage both psychologically and future employment prospects having demonstrated how easily they could be manipulated into committing an armed robbery.
I know Derren Brown uses trickery and possibly (if not probably) staged actors as 'unsuspecting' members of the public, which is fine by me as long as it is entertaining. This wasn't and was actually distasteful and disturbing.
