Today I watched the Heist, I've watched several of the other show's, but today I was watching with a completely skeptical view as for some time I've been trying to understand what he is doing.
If you ask a magician these days are they any difirent too old magicians, they will tell you that old magicians tried to pass off their tricks as the result of having magical powers, these days knowing nobody believes in magic they just take the route of being open that it is simply a slight of hand trick, or a numbers trick, etc etc. I believe Derren's techniques are more similar to the old style. He trys to pass off his 'tricks' as the result of psychological abilities, when infact they are simply 'tricks', like camera tricks, etc.
A few things I noticed in "the heist", and I'd love to confirm them, but I dont have the show recorded so I can't verify it. In the scene's where each of the last four are walking up the street when the opportunity of robbing the truck comes up, the first person, the girl I forget her name takes the gun from the back of her trousers, the typical gangster place to keep a gun. Let me ask you this, if your carrying a replica gun, down a London street, and your not a gangster, wheres the last place you want to keep this very real looking gun? "Sorry officer, its just a imitation gun I'm carrying around for a TV show, I've also got a imitation sword on my back, and a rubber knife in my sock". Really it was just a simple acting mistake!
Second, the third guy, simply put, when hes caught and with Derren, theres only one word for what I saw.. overacting.
The last guy, probably the only non actor. I was so annoyed when he didnt go for the bait because he was in a shirt so couldnt take the gun from a pocket, I was hoping he would pull his gun from a violin case or something..
What I'm trying to say is, even if Derren Brown can condition people to be bank robbers with his techniques, isn't he making his TV show the hard way? Like, wouldn't it be so much easier to hire out a few actors, and get them to pretend they are absorbing all these subliminal messages, and then just pretending they were taken over by these feelings to just rob the van. I mean, isn't he making his TV show the hard way by relying on his techniques?
Basically, in my opinion, Derren Brown is a regular old trickster, camera tricks, actors & props, and just pretends its phsycological conditioning. Why? Because evidently todays people will belive this shite far more easily than pretending he's got magical powers.
