Dense question

Does anybody know if two GNVQ's equal an AVCE? Or if two GNVQ's would be enough to possibly get into university? I'm going to college in September but instead of taking a two year AVCE I thought about doing two GNVQ's in different subjects, so I'm not bored out of my skull by the end of two years. Anyone know?

The best way to find out is to phone the uni you'd like to go to and ask them, they all have different criterea depending on the uni and the course you'd like to do. Also it is a good idea, if the uni is nearby, to speak to the person running the course. Don't ask if it's okay to join, tell them you want to do that course and let them ask you what qualifications you have.

hmm, I thought GNVQ's were a thing of the past,

GNVQ became AVCE

and you can usually fit in an A-level with an AVCE, AS for the first year, A2 for the second year

Gnvq was supposed to be equivalent to two A-levels or something :/

yeah, thats what an AVCE is atm, atleast according to my ucas scheme thingie

240 points for an A grade, A-level is 120 points for an A grade

I got in to uni (albeit a shit one) with a BTEC. Which was (at the time) slightly better than a GNVQ. I'd imagine that two GNVQs would do it.

GNVQ = one year equivalent to half an AVCE
AVCE = two year equivalent to two a-levels (what's needed to get into Uni, roughly)

I wondered if two GNVQ's on different subjects would give me the same amount of points as an AVCE... Cheers for the answers, I think I'll have to wait until next week to phone the college tho :/

not just all about points sadly :(
some want grades, some want certain amount of points at A2
eg Bournemouth want 200 points at A-level for me, the bastards.
So my 2 AS levels don't count :/

other unies tho, couldn't give a flying fuck, take Roehampton, who said get xxx points and show proof of GCSE certificates

200 points is low :/. I thought AS subjects did count, but only if you haven't taken them to A2.

its 240, but I need 200 in A2 units
key skills and general studies give me the last 40, but it means my maths AS is wasted :/

I thought Key skills and Gen. Studies were looked at by most uni's, as I was alwas lead to believe they were important. Which meant i actually went to the lessons :|

Nah, the majority say they don't want them. If you look at the UCAS site, you'll see that most courses at most universities will say something like 'excluding General Studies' and that Key Skills points aren't counted towards the offer. The only reason Key Skills were important at our college was that they got money for students passing (or something like that anyway).

I took a Double AVCE in Business, the uni I phoned up, Uni of Plymouth said it was an equivelent of doing two A-levels the only difference is that u do more Coursework than Exams in the AVCE.

Yay, so that means i say through hours of Application of Number (read: piss easy maths), comms and basic ict for nothing :|

Lol, you had to do all of them? IT was such a waste, didn't actually learn anything new and the teacher was an idiot.

Yes, unfortunatly :(
Although the teacher was a right cock, he spent a 1hr 30 min lesson explaining something, then realised he was on about the wrong lesson and that the information he was explaining had no relevance to what we were doing. He proceeded to cry :|

My college tried to make our entire year take vocational (spastic) studies in things like IT one day a week during our lunch period. Safe to say that they failed miserably, even the nurds didn't go. And I left.

Oh, and no-one went to media/film/general studies (or P.E.) in high school either, because it was obvious as fuck that only cripples and retards could benefit.

Moral; do a fucking proper qualification, or none at all.

I chose none at all. So I did take my own advice, see? Logic, guv'nor!

I also had been doing proper qualifications (insofar as they're the next respected step, they're still shite as qualifications go).

(Hi mank, are you on crack?)

No, are you?

I realise GNVQ's aren't as good as a-levels but I'm not particularly intelligent and would likely struggle doing a-levels. There are also no decent a-level subjects at the college I'm going to with the exception of art. This topic wasn't started as an opportunity for you to waltz in and call them shit, I had a genuine question.
