Defrag

Hi all,

Recently it seems my computer is getting a tad slow. Lauching games of Quake 3 and to a greater extent rtcw, has become a bit sluggish. Besides games other programs are definetly running slower.

I'm considering a defrag except the last time I tried one it took literally a day. I have a 30gb maxtor hard drive and was wondering what improvements a defrag would bring and how long it should take (when I did it before, my system was totally fuxed anyway so I'm thinking that's why it took so long).

Will games run better/faster and load quicker after a defrag?

How long should a 30gb hard drive take to defrag?

Windows 98.
p3 733
380 ish RAM
Maxtor UDMA66
Gigabyte GA-6CXC mobo

Any help would be appreciated :)

Yes your games will improve loading/saving times. Your defrag is probably taking so long because either
  • your disc is so badly fragmented it takes that long to fix
  • you are wroting to the disc during the defrad (turn everything off)
  • all of the above

I notice you have '380 ish RAM'.
How is this ram made up? Your not using a 256 chip and a 128 chip are you? Even if you are using 3x 128 chips, there are many people who would tell you only to use chips in pairs. You should certainly only use chips of the same size and type together.
Are you sure it's not your ram thats causing slow down?

I also have a sorta Defrag problem, after like 10% of the way thru Defraggin, it "restarts" and does it all the time..

But a few months back when the [.tv] Channel was up on Sky, on that "Chips" or somethin someone had the same prob, and they said press CTRL+ALT+DEL and close all the Programs down inside there...

That actually worked when i tried it then, but now it won't :(

Pre-Windows 2000 operating systems are utterly shit at defragging. The restarting is always caused by something writing to the disk at which point the MS defrag goes "Oh, wow! Something new on the disk! Even though it's in a bit I haven't got to yet I'm gonna restart the whole process! Yes, that's the thing to do!" MS realised how crap their Win 95, 98 and Me defrag solution was and implemented a cut-down version of Diskeeper Lite for Windows 2000 and XP, which works much better.

If you're not using 2K or XP I strongly recommend you download a trial version of Diskeeper 7.0 and never use the built-in defragger again.

Wasn't that banned from the German version of Windows because it was written by an nazi supremacist or something? I forget the details... :)

The first thing you need to do is boot up and then close down as many programs as possible.

The run scandisk.

Then, when you run defrag, make sure you uncheck the "Rearrage Program Files" option in the settings, then continue.

I leave my machine on 24/7, I have defrag running on each partition once a week, they never take more than 10 minutes and the disk is always nice and fast.

The only way to keep defrag running fast is to do it often.

In my experience your better off with same size, same type, same make, same standard memory chips of whatever platform for things to run best. I've had generally worse ram performance in the past whenever i've had different sized chips installed in the mobo. I didn't mean just for defrag though, I was also referring to "Recently it seems my computer is getting a tad slow."

When i bought my computer it had 128 mb of sdram (1x128dimm)

Just before christmas I got an extra 256mb. Not sure what RAM it is but it was done in a computer shop so I presume/hope they knew what they were doing.

I got diskeeper, gonna try it out tonight. Thanks for all the help.

Lol i wouldnt go fuckin near my Local Computer Shop, you buy some Memory from em, and its faulty, you take it back and the fuckers wont refund/change without puttin up a big fight...

also, if you go there to get your comp fixed, they charge £15 to look at it, and like £60 to fix it... then when you take it back and it still gives probs you have to pay £15 again for em to look at it...

On one occasion i believe one of my Bro's mates went to the shop and wanted his money back coz he was ripped, and the guy who owns it fuckin went ballistic shouting/screaming and threatening lol...

I aint been there for like 4 months, coz their Gits lol

I really don't think it's a RAM issue as I had it put in months ago and I've only noticed a slight dip in performance within the last week.

I've got my uncle coming over to help me fit my new gfx card so I'll get him to look at it for me. If they have done anything wrong then I'll go and complain, obviously, but I doubt it very much.

If they go ballistic at me, I'll just tell them to fuck off :p
