ok, i've got to the stage now where my NVidia TNT2 is a complete pile of shite that needs to rush its ass into the nearest bin asap to make way for a successor.

The plan at the moment is to pick up a nice cheap GF2 and then when I splash out later in the year (cos I definatly need to get a new PC sorted) pick myself up a GF4 (basically cos I know if I get a GF3 now, I won't upgrade to a 4, cos I'm like that :))

So basically I'm wondering whats the best AGP GF2 to go for atm, i.e. Manufacturer/Cost (Value)/Performance/etc.

Thx in advance you lovley peeps :)

Absolute BEST bargain at the minute (OK - next month) will be some form of GF4 4200. Save up an extra 50 quid or so and you will get a card that makes a GF2 seem like an S3 card :) GF2s are really not gonna cut it with Doom3 and UT2003 etc... Unless single-figure frame-rates give you the horn :)

/edit: hopefully you should be able to get one for £170 or so and they'll outperform any GF3 or ATI offering.

yup but that's the first sensible think wij has said in weeks... take heed young mystic - he's right y'know...

moving from tnt2 to geforce 2 12 months ago would *maybe* have been acceptable...

doing it now would be like upgrading a 1.1l fiesta to a 1.2l when everyone else is cruising around in dodge vipers... - the lack of pixel and vertex shaders will mean it runs *slightly* faster but it will still suck TREMENDOUSLY with 90% of the games released in the last year...

sort it out!

aye but the idea is to retire this "fiesta" to the garage in the next few months without it being completely outdated, hence I don't really wanna put a GF4 in it cos it'd probably just come out & then this box would get TNT2'd again :(

I bought a Creative GF2 Ti 64MB from Dabs for £84.60 and i'm quite happy with that, not sure how it would cope with the latest games though, but i'm running rtcw on it very nicely...

I gotta Asus Geforce 2 V7100 about 2 months back, nice card and was £60 from ebuyer, then a few weeks later they bring out a cheapy version of the Geforce 4 for £80 which buggered me up :(

Cheapy GF4 is NOT a GF4. The GF4 MX ones are almost identical to GF2s. If you are going to get a GF4 make sure it's a Ti. The Ti4200 is the cheapest but blows everything else available (apart from Ti4400 and Ti4600) out of the water by a large margin. especially in upcoming games this year. Do yourselves a favour and don't buy anything except a GF4 Ti at the moment. There is no real competition until the next-gen parts come out.

Remember, UT2003 and Doom3 etc will play like SHITE on a GF2. Spend the extra 50 quid and forget having to upgrade for a long time :)

Games are still getting around to using hardware T&L let alone pixel & vertex shaders, tho the GF4 4200 is still the best bet.

Those GeForce 4 Ti4xxxs are pretty bloody expensive, aren't they? Thankfully, Xavier's sending one to me. I had to visit some amateur website and answer a stoopid question, but worth it, imo.

I might treat myself when Unreal 2 is released and buy that and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 at the same time.

When is the GF4 Ti4200 being released. I really think I need to upgrade my Prophet 4500. It's slowing everything else down :(

Last I heard it was supposed to be released at the end of last month. Not helpful, I know. :(

What I really need to know is will they be available at the end of May, and if I should go for a Ti4200 or Ti4400?

Depends on the price :)

You won't notice that much diff between a 4200 and a 4400 tbh.

The extra 64meg won't make much difference though. Not so's you could tell just looking at the game.

And Meg - you fool ! All my advice wasted :(

I'm undecided. If I can get a Ti4200 when my exams are over I will. If they aren't available I'll get a Ti4400.

Should the Ti4200 be available by May 31st?

I'm not fucking buying a GF4 for a box that doesn't have the capacity to use it fully \/

wtf?? you'd rather at high resolutions that the system shifted loads of data across the AGP instead of using the 128Mb and sacrificed fps ??? of course it makes a difference - something you'd know if you'd read our ti4600 article... check out the 128Mb frame buffer section :
