Oh the pleasure that would come from torturing people who steal from others...

Awful experience for her, but at least some good came of it......
Nothing was stolen but £1,200 damage was caused to the double-glazed door.

Double glazed doors = shite

Pray tell why? I was thinking of double-glazing the whole house and this would have been part of the job.

actually Upvc doors are now built securely, they are comprised of a sandwich of upvc outer, foam inner and a wooden center, but thats only if you get a solid door.. if its one with top and bottom windows then its empty and really easy to break into.

the rehau profile itself (the common upvc frame) does have a lateral weakness close to where the lock and bolt join together, the new doors are coming out with deadbolts along the top and bottom points of the door to reduce the amount of "forced entries" in some doors.
the weakness itself is from when the diamond-tipped drill bits have cut in and heated the surround, so when the screws are forced in there is micro fractures in the plastic.. i could tell you the fools way of breaking in to any upvc door but i wont.. :p

i know all this from working a month in a manufacturing plant that does most of the upvc frames in the UK.

Look how many beautiful houses, even modestly priced terraced houses, that have been ruined by white PVCu doors. Its architectural vandalism, and whats more, they don't degrade. I think I'm correct in saying that the USA has banned uPVC and PVCu because of this.

My house is the only one on the entire row that retains both its original front door, and windows. The rest all have cheap B&Q wooden shite, or PVCu cack.

My advice to you is if your home has the original, bespoke wooden front door, but its in poor condition, get a carpenter to come round and repair it. Most old wooden doors that are damaged need only a few hours work to repair, mostly the bottom panel (water damage), and the edge that contains the lock (dunno what its called), from having multiple locks over its lifetime.

Once you remove the original features of the house, and replace them with plastic, much of the character that made it so appealing in the first place will have been lost. Mark my words, in 50-100 years time people will be bemoaning PVCu, in much the same way that people rant about fireplaces and original features being removed in the 50s and 60s.
