I'm still undecided if I'm going to create an infraction for feeding trolls.

These people thrive on the attention. They do not care for conversation itself. They will do anything to get attention. They have proved time and again that they can not handle themselves in this environment, ergo no attention is no returning imo.

Why not make it so new forum accounts have to be approved by a moderator?

Agree with what Bahu said tbh, make it so they have to be varified by mods before they can post, it'll slow them down atleast and they might get bored.... check their ips so if 10 accounts all sign up at the same time check them against each other ip wise.

would be a good idea, as long as it's aimed at "trollish behavior" from known trolls....

if they behave "football thread f.exp, then I dont think people should be infracted, as long as the comversation is pleasant and sane...
but the Wonk thread is a great example of something that should simply be ignored wich instead escalated, and was close to ruining an otherwise "seriouse and personal" thread.

to be very clear, I am talking more or less exclusively about people, new or previously banned, signing up with accounts with the specific purpose of disrupting normal forum activity (whatever that may be).

I and the other mods ban just about every thing else, but we need you guys to help us get the rest. In certain cases the trolls are only here to get a rise out of you. Don't fall for it: like I said above ignore them, report their posts, and we will make them go away. If you don't respond to them at all, they will get bored.

already mentioned heh. we don't, it's as simple as that. what we can do with such a measure is weed out spambots before they actually get to the forum, and scan for people using blatant proxy servers or throwaway email addresses.
stopping a persistent spammer or troll is works more or less similar to stopping a spam email. you have to get it before you can test it for giveaways. also, we mods can't do it all by ourselves; we need you guys to help us out.

Are spambots still a major problem on VBulletin? I mean its a bloody expensive script, I would have thought it would be fairly spam proof?

oh no, I didn't feel it was a dig. don't get me wrong: all the active mods look out for the forums in their own way, or in ways that are not visible to the end user.

I'll write some stuff down and put it in the magic mod forum of mystery and see what happens.
