David Blaine - Above The Below

Just watched this programme on C4.

What a weird hour it has been. Either im mad or the filmmaker/director of the programme was. Couldn't make any head or tails of it but I had to watch it just to see if it became any weirder to watch - it did.

The best part was the last 10 mins or so where he was released and they printed facts on the ticker bar, everything else about the program was shite/weird (tho him being surrounded my nekkid ladies with plastic tits was quite fun).

Anyone catch this and what did you think of it?

His shows usually involve clip after clip of his face-to-face magic, followed by something to do with a stunt.

Yeh but at the news conference he cut part of his ear off (well it looked it like from the blurry camera image as he walked past).

Then he was covered in blood and threw cards at the camera.

Then he was talking to some bird in Lambeth saying he was broken hearted, then proceeded to rip into his chest and pull out a heart.

Very fucking weird man.

It's where they show Crimewatch, Whipped. Which you'd know if you'd seen the section recreating a beautiful woman being kidnapped several days ago by a guy who looked a bit like Sue Perkins.

Yep, I watched "Above and Below".

The thing is, David Blaine has mixed an odd kind of mysticism and menace into his illusions, which is unlike anything before.

Penn and Teller do the gore stuff aswell, but they havent got this strangeness about them.

I guess thats David Blaine's appeal, he's not a Vegas showman, he comes across as an ordinary bloke with strange "powers".

In addition to working on the eye, he works on the mind more than any illusionist Ive seen.

In fact, I think hes supposed to be a little scary and somehow not quite human, which is how the producer of the show portrayed him, with the complete non-reaction to naked women, and the blood stuff.

All credit to him though, he must have been going crazy in that box

totally agree farsight. I didnt watch the programme as most telly bores me but I do kinda like Blaine. I think the people who are down him most are merely those who don't understand his motives. I'm not saying I fully understand his reasoning I just find that we as people tend to dismiss that which we don't understand.
