Was the lead guy on Tribes2 and is the lead guy on Planetside.

When T2 was released it was a cracking game (despite objections from some T1'ers that the game was too slow).

It was also bugged to fuck.

Unfortunately - planetside seems to be the same at the moment - with about 10 days to patch it up properly before gold....

How can they let him do the same shit twice?!

Good game tho

The good days of Tribes 1, the most perfect online game ever devised.

The shit of Tribes 2 as they fell into the omg lets stick loads of new big cool weaponry in and it will be even better.

lol scouse, T2 is a good game in its own right but compared to T1 its shit.

Tribes 1 takes a lot more skill to play well, and thats why its so great.

Got very fond memories of Tribes 1 it got me into online gaming and lanning with some great guys.

Tribes 1 was perfection, it had the team aspect yet it also had room for a single player to make a difference to the course of a game, it was easy enough to pick up but impossible to master with the sheer amount of available routes and skills.

The mid air disc, the mid air plasma, the mine disc, the mine gren disc, mortar jumping.

The fast pace of it also made it a game of immense skill as its more complicated to work our trajectories and where to shoot with a slow projectile to hit a fast moving object with a ping of 200 and no lag correction :-]

The unrivalled feeling of stealing a teams flag from under their nose and being chased all the way back with every moment of contact with the ground being a potential point of death, only immense skill keeping you alive whilst 5 chasing light armours chisel away at your health and capping in the dying seconds of a match to clinch victory.

Impossible to beat that feeling :-]

INSOMNIACS FOREVER :-]

Owning it up with Trampy, Sinjin, Irn-Bru, Slinky, Afty, Kittens ( nice bloke eh Xtro? ), And everyone else :-] Tribes 1 was just awesome in every aspect.

Tribes 2 was such a dissapointment for the majority of Tribes 1 Players because we were expecting a refinement to our beloved game instead they took it in a different direction. Some people adjusted and realised it was still a good game but for others without the feel of the original it just wasnt the same.

ahhhh I could go on for ages about Tribes :-]

I give a lot of credence to much of your argument but you shoot yourself over there.

The over-prevealence and ease of mine-disking (even mid-air) and the fact that you could make a cap-run in about 3 seconds [no exaggeration] on Avalanche (from the NME base, quick diskjump (well timed) would send you at a speed even snipers couldn't hit you at). and the total permeation of so many scripts that all skill was lost ruined it for me.

Perfection - until people found out about all the exploits - then it became no more fun to play :(

(That, and the fact that I lost my Knights of Nee! sound pack files).... ;)

You're both lame tbh, Quake2 was the ultimate game and anyone that disputes that will get a trout slap, anyone who agrees with me will hold a loving place in my heart forever.

[edit: oops, dragged this hugely off topic. sorry. carry on and ignore me!]

I think the Knights of Nee! pack was trampies not 100% sure.

Avalanche was hardly one of the better maps.

Canyon Crusade, Snowblind, Rollercoaster, etc, all fantastic maps.

I agree with you to some extent that overscripting was bad BUT I disagree about the extent for example the mine discing scripts were adequate for low skilled players but a high skilled player would be able to perform it more accurately and at higher speeds against faster moving opponents. The same with disc jumping and all of the other things.

Tribes is great even without someone to play against you can have great fun just ski-ing around a map hitting new routes and trying variations or just freestyling and keeping going as long as possible to improve your technique.

The ultimate in skill was being able to increase speed working your way up a slope, something VERY few people could manage.

scripts could take a low or medium skilled player into that of above average or even to being considered good but anyone who played at a decent level would be able to thrash anyone using such scripts.

Put anyone from BR or cF against anyone using all the scripts you can find and it wont make a jot of difference.

Tribes is similar to quake in that a skilled player can dodge most of the weaponry an enemy throws at them with the only exceptions being the chain gun up close or the laser rifle at range, and even then after taking a hit a skilled player could maneuvre out of harms way.

Tribes capping runs performed to a high degree of skill make it look like the player is gliding effortlessly across the round dancing with a storm of bullets behind him, thats what made Tribes so great, and exactly what Tribes 2 failed to capture.

EDIT: Avalanche wasnt even a default map :/

CL vs Ooz 1-0 on Snowblind.

Best moment ever in T1, maybe me being ENG capt in T1 World champs comes 2nd.

As for Kittens bit...hmm ECA :).

I don't think T2 was that bad tbh, just nothing compared to T1.

/edit: I did use to like playing IS as we always knew it was 3 points in the bag but it was still a fun game ;). Who was that cunt in IS that moaned all the time...ah yes..Mobley.

lol warmup in IS games waiting for tournament mode to start the match was always manic due to the IS chat pack.

the insomanics music blasting with people adding liberal dose of Nee! down the line heheh.

THAT'S the fucker!!! :)

PS. KoN pack was mine after I took the courageous Knights over from the venerable Madfish... Trampy and Dodgy joined us later on in their waning careers to have a laugh :)

The difference? KoN played as a loose collection for fun - we weren't overly concerned whether we won or lost (although we did have our fair share of victories) - and were more in it for a knockaround.

Once all those scripts made most of the medium-tricky stuff a piece of piss they ruined the fun of it. It was the demise of tribes and all that was left playing were script-monkeys and the ultra-l33t hardcore tribers...

You could tell that simply from the enthusiasm for the leagues that people weren't having the fun that they used too.

KoN struggled to see one more season out, with most of the players saying goodbye (including myself).....

I agree that T2's design does take away some of the individual skill. That's deliberate IMHO. The designers enjoyed T1 but wanted a game that encouraged teamwork at all levels (not just in actual Tribes). And to some extent they succeeded. But the loss of l33tness was too much for some to handle and they badmouthed it to near-extinction.

Personally - I still think that T2 is gr8 fun but frustrating as fuck a lot of the time due to people trying to go it alone.

ho-hum :(
