It's great! You're killing drinkers with a group then suddenly your framerate takes a complete dive. Thankfully you just kill the last one of them drinkers before you're being steamrollered by about 100 Albs :)

[group] Did I just see 100 Albs come through here or can't I count?
[group] Sure looked like it
[group] Right, better release :)

Framerates are very important in art galleries.
Sometimes frames are actually worth more than the actual paintings!!! *gasps and runs off*

You can find a load of our guilds first trip into there here. They might not make a great deal of sense unless you can recognise the mobs involved though as there are no annotations :)

Hannible, as Sickofit's reply to your question may not be *entirely* helpful :b:

The framerate is basically (I'm no techie) the rate at which your comp refreshes the pictures on the screen to give you this impression of smooth animation.

As the comp is exchanging information with the servers when you play DAoC sometimes (when 100 albs suddenly show up) the information sent to your computer surges (lots of new info for you computer to turn into graphics of ugly tincans) and that takes computing power away from screen-refreshment: you get what looks like 4 or 5 still pictures over 2 or 3 seconds, it's bloody annoying, you can't fight, you can't run, you can just die...

It's technically different from lag, but the result is the same: it prevents you from playing. Usually it's temporary though more powerful computers of course manage this better than older ones, and powerful connections are a huge help.

Hmm... not sure I understand the word 'cockeyed' properly (I'm not english you see) so I think I'll take that as a compliment ?

A drop in framerate is in most cases not related to connection. It happens when there is so much happening on your screen that your processor and graphics card have trouble drawing it fast enough. One of those occasions would be when a zerg of about 100 people comes running by :) That is a lot of things to draw and even the fastest of current systems would have a hard time keeping that up. To ensure reasonably smooth animation I would think about 30 images (frames) per second have to be drawn. Your framerate thus is the amount of images per second. (It's basically the same idea as a film projector in a sense).

Of course when you play on a slow connection (modem) it might have trouble coping when a lot of players are active around you, which also leads to players on your screen moving eratically or your commands not getting through. In this case the slow connection is an extra problem on top of the framerate, but it's not the same thing.

If you flick your eyes quickly between said screenshots you can even replecate the unique Darkness Falls framerate and experience...
