A guildie asked me about this because he wanted to be able to Alt-Tab to his desktop to check on MSN/ICQ blah blah etc etc whilst playing but wasn't sure if it was legal or not.

Is it legal? Everytime I hear it mentioned it is usually followed by the word haXXor (or however the hell you spell it) but being able to Alt-Tab doesn't seem like cheating to me...seems pretty useful.

I've also heard that it can be used to run 2 clients simultaneously which I am assuming to mean that if the person has 2 accounts then he can run them at the same time on one PC. Again, is this legal or cheating?

Its cheating, its strictly against the Code of Conduct and you can be banned for it, plain and simple.

But feel free to check with the GM's and GOA.

Ask in #daoc.prydwen (quakenet).

I'd guess most of the people in there are playing DAoC aswell, and most of those from the same PC.

The cheating aspect comes down to two things:

1. Spying

The realms are supposed to be separate, with the players from each realm unabe to communicate. Adding an extra communication channel (i.e. IRC, etc) breaks this and makes it easier for people to spy on another realm.

2. Macroing

Some MMORPGs (Asheron's Call in particular, though also UO) suffered from people writing scripts outside the game that would allow characters to level themselves without player intervention. Making a game run in windowed mode makes it easier for people to write macro exploits.

Its definitely cheating. I had a problem where my client kept crashing and when I emailed the support guys they said

"This is usually caused by running DAOX (which is illegal by the way)."

I wasnt running DAOX (still dont know what it is) but the problem cleared itself up somehow!

Cheating pah!

Using Daox isn't cheating but it is against the CoC. The reason programs which return the multitasking capability of the Windows OS (deliberately disbaled by Mythic) are forbidden is to deter people easily using third party programs whilst running Daoc. There are valid reasons for this, but it is mucho annoying nonetheless.

Daox is easy to use, very convenient and totally undetectable by GOA. As long as you only use it to return the fundamental capability of your OS to multitask and not to cheat, I personally see no problem with using it.

Technically your OS still multitasks while daoc is running, all that is removed is your ability to interact with other tasks.

I didn't say it would elliminate spying, just that it helps to prevent it. We'd have a lot more problems with unwanted inter-realm comms if DAOC could easily (legally) be run windowed.

They could have at least disabled the windows key in game if they are gonna make the game crash to solve this problem, nothing more annoying.

Do we care? No.

He's hardly the only person with two accounts on different realms.

The plain fact of the matter is, people who want to spy on other realms will find ways to do it anyway.

It's just a shame that the majority have to suffer, whilst the people who were meant to be prevented from such exploits have already found a way out.



At the very least, Mythic should add teleport pads across the realm, so you don't have to travel for 30mins to reach the nearest merchant!

I have a windows key but mine doesnt work when I run DAOC. The only way I can get to windows is CTRL+ALT+DEL.

CAn't help but to laugh at all this. Ok, what do we know? DAoX or whatnot is illegal, against the CoC which all the players agreed to follow. Yes even you Chesnor, remember that accept, decline button while installing? That's it, you agreed. And with the latest patch there was again, agreement so you can play. So why the hell even discuss if it's legal or not, you shouldn't use it period. Then again, go ahead, use it, i'm suuure Mythic or GOA don't hear from anyone, check out the logs or do anything else to prevent the use of Daox. Mmhm, like taking money from a bank. :p

Wow... I actually fully agree with Toto.

Either you play your game.
Or you do something else.
It's simple, isn't it?

I started playing Jagged Alliance 2 again to take a little break from DAoC. Not once did I feel the need to alt+tab to check MSN/ICQ yada yada.

Bunch of lame excuses if you ask me.

ROFL. What a dull and boring life you must lead. Just because the law says "thou shalt do do x,y,z 'cos its naughty and you will be punished!!!!11", do you blindly comply? Even when the law is stupid/wrong/hopelessly out of date. (btw I am not arguing for the use of Daox).

I just take a pragmatic view. Daox and similar programs are prohibited because they could facilitate cheating. If you cheat then you are a bad person and are going to hell. If you use Daox because you want to use IRC, Winamp, or whatever while you are on a horse from Lyonesse to CS, then so what.

ROFLLOLOLOASL?! What a scary ass, mindblowing sensation YOU must have when you manage to play DAoC and try to hit on 15 year old teenage girls on the IRC at the same time! Look ma! I'm living on the edge, sure i'll take the trash out after Hot Sexy HOrny biatch gives me her homenumber! It's funny how you first say i obey every law jsut because i say using Daox is wrong. I don't use Daox 'cause i don't need it, the CoC might say it's illegal but it's not the reason i don't use it. Hell, i haven't even read the CoC so who really cares. But i do have more ways to use the time spent on horse from Lyonesse to CS then to download more pr0n from the inturnet. Then agian, maybe you had one too many nacho while trying to find naked pictures of male trolls that you simply can't move from your computer. Shame really, with your wits and superior intelligence you could have even been the president ...well..of a chessclub but that's probably a dream you allready fulfilled.

/em notes that toto has probably never even loaded an irc client let alone actually seen what daoc players talk about on IRC. Like to make bigoted and ill-informed comments do you toto?
