People who have been playing games like Unreal Tournament , Quake 3 and similiar team-based games have surely heard of pickup IRC channels.

The idea of such a channel is for people to get a group going and then get a announcement when group is ready to go.

My idea is making such a channel for DAOC. A channel made for making groups instead of sitting around all night long hoping to get a group going.
A example would be :
Person X is a healer , he joins the channel named for example #daoc.pickup .
In channel he types "!add healer mid pry" By typing !add healer mid pry it´s like saying Healer LFG with the exception that the bots in the channel will automatically give this person a group when there is one ready with need of a healer specified in a database storing information of different group setups etc. When a group match has been found he and the rest of the group will get a announcement to enter the game and the names of the people supposed to join group.

This is not hardcore programming , could pretty eazily be defined by some simple rules for group setup and have the information stored in a database which will make sure all groups are balanced and when a group is ready a announcement will be sent out to all the players that group is ready to go.

What i´m looking for by making this post is people who are willing to help out with this channel, ideas and thoughts of this.

Some people with special skills in SQL , IRC-scripts would really help this become reality.

I think a channel like this would really boost the activity in the game and let casual players have some fun as well.

As you certainly know, those pickup channels were usually suffering from the afk syndrome... people !adding, then going afk. :(
Another problem would be the group setup distribution. Would you be able to !add to a group even if you´re the 5th caster? In a shooter game like Q3, it doesn´t matter... you´re being added as a player. However, with different classes combining to a viable group, it´s considerably harder.

create a BG/CG for lfg in your realm...

voila!

Though it does mean you need to be online and in the bg/cg with a character. That said it reduces the /afk syndrome by forcing them to be online.

Group leaders could just check the bg/cg and grab people.

Or people could use the LFG window though since ToA it's become too complex so noone uses it anymore.

I was a mod of an IRC channel back in the mid 90's. It all went pear shaped eventually, i havent used IRC, mIrc(or equivalents) after that time.

As i said the database will be configured with different groupsetups , storing information of players and what classes who wants group , then combine the different classes who wanted group and add them all into a classwise balanced group.

I know it´s not perfect groups , low RR´s mixed with high RR´s but for the casual players it sure as hell is better than 3 shadowblades 4 bonedancers and a warrior grouping to have a template of the perfect different setups there are and a automatically handed out a group suitable for you, this will of course make stealthers not getting groups in this channel.

But as a random average player I´m certain people want balanced groups without sitting around in emain and trying everything to get a group going, now they can get a balanced group going with just 3 words and wait. The groupleader is a automated bot , with directions from a database so no need anymore for the hassle of one person stressing themselves to death just to get a group going that leaves after one run.

What about the "set gank groups" ? I think this will help them come closer to beating or atleast giving the "set groups" a harder battle than before. Making it moore enjoyable for both parties. If you ever were in a "set group" you know how booring it can be with meeting unbalanced groups days on end. When you meet a balanced group it´s always fun no matter what the outcome.

But if people are skeptic about this idea, I will not waste my time and effort to make this work, since it will require a big amount of people from all different servers on this channel to work. I just wanted to boost DAOC in a positive way.
