cyclic redundancy check

I've been trying and trying to install soldier of fortune II but it doesn't seem to want to copy over propery. Its installed fine in the past so i don't understand whats goten into it?

Basically, the install prgress is very jumpy, may stick on one percentage for a while and then jumps up like another 5%.
I checked the PK3 files it had copied to my harddisk and they were considerablly small than what they should be, at least 30meg smaller than the originals on the disk.
I tryed to copy them over and replace them manually but, for example with the file 'musicandsound.PK3', when about 75% of the file has copied, it stops, my cd drive slows down, and then after a bit it give me this error:

Cannot copy musicandsound: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I dunno what this cyclic redundancy check is about other than being some form of data transfer error detection?
All my other games install no problem and it is a fairly new and high quality drive i'm using, a plextor plexiwriter 40/12/40A.

Can anyone please let me know if there've had problems like this or maybe know whats going on here? I'm just itchin' for john mullins to be blowing off some limbs :p

cyclic redundancy check (CRC): 1. An error-detection scheme that (a) uses parity bits generated by polynomial encoding of digital signals, (b) appends those parity bits to the digital signal, and (c) uses decoding algorithms that detect errors in the received digital signal. Note: Error correction, if required, may be accomplished through the use of an automatic repeat-request (ARQ) system. 2. [An] error checking mechanism that checks data integrity by computing a polynomial algorithm based checksum. [INFOSEC-99]

It doesn't matter if you understand that, it suggests that the drive you're reading from isn't working right. It could be a dirty/dusty/sratched CD, or a dirty/dusty CD ROM/DVD ROM lens.

Do you get problems with other CDs? Trying to do the same things? Like installation and copying? If you do, then try getting hold of a CD Lens cleaner - they cost about £5 - and set that going in the drive. Then try.
Also, take a good look at you SOFII CD, wibble it in the light and see if there's any deep scratches and dirty/dust built up.
Very deep scratches means you are buggered, but light scracthes can often be repaired using a polish, or one of those funny scratch removal gadgets.

Mainly, you do need to track down where the problem is - CD or CD Drive. If cleaning the CD lens doesn't work, and if the problem does occur with other media, then you might have a faulty drive, but try everything before drawing that conclusion.
