all well and good if you don't mind missing calls, not so good if you need to answer them as they come in...

Unless you're a doctor on call, I fail to see how this situation could arise.

you're seriosly saying that being a doctor is the only job in the world you can think of where you need to take calls straight away?:)

the nature of my job requires me to be available 24x7 should the need arise. I'm on-call one week in four as it is anyway.
I don't particularly enjoy this situation but such is life heh. if I'm not on-call the only time I don't have a mobile phone or pager (or both) on me is when I go out.

pretty much the same here, my work phone me sometimes to ask if I can go other places at certain times and It'd be too late if I didn't check it till half an hour later or whatever. In fact if they couldn't get through to me they would have to ask somebody else and I'd lose money.

it is just a job but if I don't do it I don't eat, et cetera...

sure it's just a job. sadly I'm plagued by this little thing called responsibility, and I'm well paid to give up a small portion of my private life to be available to my work at certain times.
sometimes this arrangement sucks rancid goat cock and sometimes, like the coming few weeks where I hardly have to work at all, it's pretty cool :)

to be honest, I am often envious of other it-related people around me, the coders, managers and other overhead generators. they are the ones who get to sleep because I am awake if you follow my meaning. I need sleep too, every now and then.

I'd use the bluethooth kit, surely you have enough time to stop and say "hello, can you hold on a moment" and be safe enough.

thought part of the prob was not knowing it was ringing and not wanting bits of wire strangling him?

I do a bit of cycling now and then and I have my phone (like someone else mentioned) on vibrate in my shirt back pocket. Depends on what your wearing I guess, but through a couple of layers of lycra, it can be felt quite easily.

Altenativley, strap it to your ass cheek, you'll definatly hear it vibrate then. ;)
