How long does a package take to clear customs in the UK? I've got something from the US "going through clearance" and it has been for a couple of days...

It's the bird's xmas present :(

From experience typically a day or two but Xmas is a much, much busier time. However I've had stuff go through in a few hours and others that took upto 2 weeks where they obviously opened the package to check for the heroin I was shipping in from Afghanistan. I've found that using a more reputable international carrier (like Fed-Ex or UPS) tends to get my orders through a lot quicker so the higher cost is often worth it.

Surely it'll go through their conveyor belt and they'll see it's a camera, at xmastime, and then send their most trusted employee directly to my house with the package knowing my urgent need?

I believe there is no trusted employee at HMC....
I guess you don't believe a trusted employee at HMC exists?

Last couple of times I've come back from Holland there's been no-one at all working customs.

Next time, oh next time.

Is it a special edition self-incineration copy of The Bible? ;)

Might actually delay it further, electronics tend to(atleasst accordin to a Finnnish customs chick i know).

Why did you order it so late? Being such a "logical" person and all :D

Nope, in my experience they'll open it, slap you with a fine equivalent to making it no cheaper to have bought it elsewhere than in say comet or dixons, then shove it back in the box (badly) and toss it over to Royal Mail who by now will probably deem that it's missed the last posting date and deliver it to you in January.

I don't know about the fees in England but I have to pay a mahoosive duty getting stuff sent from America to France. It's fucking criminal (a monopod head and a couple of lens plates - the order came to about 400 € and I had to shell out just shy of 100 € in duties or the UPS driver wouldn't give it to me), more than the TVA would be but it still works out cheaper than buying locally (and I could only get that stuff from the good ol' US of A anyway).

And that way you can run away when she tries to hit you for not buying her a Christmas present!

MOTHER FUCKER

Just picked up the pressie. Cost me £30 in import VAT and charges for the pleasure of picking it up.

The seller has sent me the wrong camera - one worth far less than the item I purchased. :(

Bought it through ebay, paid through paypal with credit card, so I should have some protection - but I'm proper hacked off. I'm going to have to go through some ridiculous rigmarole now - one I've not been through before either.

What's the process? Contact the seller (in the US), get him to send correct product and refund me the customs fee that I've paid? When he tells me to fuck off contact ebay/paypal/credit card company?

Some of you lot must have been through this before. Any advice? :(

Don't buy something like a camera from a US seller on ebay would be my first piece of advice.

Oh... wait... :(

Not immediately helpful, but thanks.

TBH - I very rarely use ebay 'cause I always thought it'd be chock full of wankers. Turns out I'm probably right.

Aaanyway. Anyone else?

First thing is contact the seller. If they're not a cunt and it was a mistake they'll send a replacement.

If they don't respond or deny it, you'll have to open a claim against them through ebay...

Aye. Seller's just had an email sent, with docs attached and a request for response within 7 days.

Bird's going to be v. unhappy - but that's a given either way :(

I haven't used ebay in years so I wouldn't be able to offer anything constructive. Some people said some semi-mean things about me as a seller but I never had a problem as a buyer.

What camera did you go for in the end anyway? And what arrived? And was it that much cheaper to get it from this guy?
