Custom maps

i'm gonna whine a bit about all those useless(imo) custom maps again :(

harshg: way to easy to defend blue base, get rid of it plz.
gefsctf2: way too big! played it last week of savage and i was bored beyond oblivion.
mlctf: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLZ REALIZE THAT THOSE ML MAPS ARE LAME :) . the spawns are gay, and crouching to get the LG. i mean is that supposed to some kinda "funny" little map feature ???
q3ctf3: it's not a custom map but still a 0-0 map. i don't see the fun playing a team on that map who would benefit from a 0-0 result. way to easy to defend!

as i see it it's all about luck. you could be lucky meeting a less experienced team on i.e. harshg and win both games, or meet a team with similar skills and win 1 and loose 1(or draw). We have no problems playing 3-4 different maps a season, maybe the other teams have i dunno.
Taking custom maps in the schedule just cause they "look nice" is not working. maybe we could test maps and maybe a sign-up page for some mixed teams. in the qw scene in denmark we used to have a 16on16 game on death32c 1 sunday a month. maybe something similar could be done with custom maps. have some polls about some of them and then test them afterwards instead of just putting them in the league.

That sounds about right in my opinion. Stronger teams beat weaker teams. Even teams draw. What's wrong with that

Shouldn't that happen with any CTF map?

Harshg - i like this map, and i have had a lot of positive feedback about it. It's a different challenge to most q3 maps, and i think a lot of clans appreciate it for that.

gefsctf2 - i've seen mostly negative opinions on this map since it was played in savage, it will remain for next week although i am pulling it from Week 10 (replaced by q3ctf2).

mlctf4 - More mixed opinion on this. Some clans like it, whilst some of the "odd" features of the maplab pak just piss off others. Quite likely it will be dropped for next season though.

q3ctf3 - Will stay.

This means a map pool for next season of q3wctf1-3, q3ctf2, q3ctf3 and harshg. Thats 6 maps, spread across a minimum of 18 games, which isn't that many.

Well, the games I admined on harshg seemed to all work pretty well. I think the advantage of maps such as harshg is that they do bring a little variety to the game. A non-symetrical map played as both teams does force teams to think a bit deeper about their tactics. TBH I dont think the Q3 CTF scene has reached anywhere near the sophisication tactics wise as the QW CTF scene did. My hope would be that as the teams and game mature we will be running the league with more complex structures, not less. I dont see it being too long before extra tactical elements such as weapon resource management (i.e. take off weapon fast respawn) will be attractive, at least to the DIV 1 and 2 teams.

Anyway thats my hope :)

Personally, I think the Harshg map is absolutely great. It reminds me of QW and is so different to the id and 3w maps that its really refreshing. Like Flametop said, the q3 ctf tactical play is behind that of QW imo. The harshg map certainly involved a lot more tactics from us and was a lot more enjoyable to play and more of an achievement to win. I love it.
Gefsctf2 seemed to be two bases with 'stuff' in the middle to take up space. Going from one base to another seems such an effort, only to be fragged as you enter the base .......... and then you have to do it all over again. It seemed to me that apart from the base areas, the rest of the map was a waste of space. It's just too big and there are too many paths/routes, making for very little action in most areas of the map.
Surely there are more maps out there arent there? I'd love to try some of them if there are a list of possibilities?

We've always been quite good at introducing custom maps, trying to add variety into the league. I did of course fail to mention the much anticipated new 3wave map pak, which i am sure will feature in any future season.

Remove all thoose silly custom maps.
There are enough with the original ID and 3w maps
to keep up the practise and tactics.
Best choice would be to only run 3w maps
b'cause 3wave team made an excellent job in doing them (and
they have alot more xperience doing ctf maps than ID or
any other ctf-map-maker-wannabe)
not to easy to defend (except wctf1). 3w maps is more wellthought!

Or why not change the league to "home-" and "away-"team ?
home team chooses maps <--! just my 2kr !--> :D
