hello peoples.

Just got half life 2, a superb game so far i have to say. :)

i gave cs-source a run on my 56k and it didnt seem to like it, infact.. i was getting a pretty constant ping of 800 on the 3 or 4 servers that i tried :(

Any hints/tips or problems that i may be missing ? Or does the game just really not support 56K?

Cheers

ping is also related to game settings i think

v.high detail that your comp cant really cope with can lead to high ping

you should try it on its lowest settings and see the ping then

Right tried that made no difference at all, its a brand new spec machine so it shoudlnt have any trouble really..

The ping seems to stay at a consistent 800, it never jumps or sways.

Does steam download in the background by any chance? my internet seems pretty busy with it just open

It was funny.

Open your steam settings and see what connection speed it thinks you have. Set it to 56k if it isn't.

Set your rate to something lower after you have done this and you are ingame. the command is "rate xxxx" once you are in the console. Typing rate on its own will show you the current value. Do the same for cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate. Raise the values slowly after lowering them, until your ping starts to raise, then go back to what should be your peak settings.

Then upgrade to broadband.

160 should be your max ping. A well tweaked 56k config should let you get pings below 120. Fiddle with different combinations, make sure your settings aren't being changed every time you re-load CS.

I played with 100-120 ping on 56k for a long time. Sub 100 pings are possible. I recommend reading SAS's guide for CS and the upset chaps guides. CS may have moved on a lot, but the basic commands are the same.

With the cheap prices of broadband these days though, the only reason not to have it is if you live in a cable and adsl free zone, which is a bummer.

Or if you don't use the net enough to warrant it.

I remember when they released the v90 update for modems everywhere and that same day I was getting sub 100 pings on wireplay servers. About 110-120 pings on a packed server. I ruled the railgun, hardcore.

Then I got on the London 2mbit ADSL trial and managed 25ms pings on wireplay servers - couldn't shoot a bloody thing, and so it has been for the past 5 years :|

No matter what I did 160 ping was the best for q2 on my 56k modem. A US Robotics external too, which was quite good at the time I believe .

In some ways I wonder if those wernt better days you know. Everyone I played Q2 with was really keen and imformed, and there was a lot less of the bullshit you get nowadays ...

They absolutely were better days (with respect to online gaming). It was far more fun than it is now.

True, the twat ratio has increased unbelievably since CS was released.

:/

For some reason it seems to be largely populated by 13 year old bum bandits. And quite a few have moved to CS:S as well. :(

Pity, it's a game I'd like to play regularly online, maybe as part of a clan, but the twat level puts me off looking for one. :<

CS in the very early days had an excellent community. It has unfortunately been a victim of it's own success.
Only a few years ago online gaming required some skills in order to actually get online, find servers, configure the game etc. Nowadays, specifically with steam it's all PnP, I think that would account for the numnuts.
I hate hearing proud parents, "oh yes little Johnnie is a whizz with computers", I will ask Little Johnnie something fairly basic and he will look at me, blank. Infact all little Johnnie can do is power up and click an icon. I suspect a chimp could be trained to do that.

Pigs can actually do that (as long as m&m's are on offer, natch).

I'm sure pigs have the intelligence, but lack of fingers may be a boundary :)

US Robotics external v90 for teh win! Suppose a lot of it did depedn on the quality of your isp. When I was on 56k and playing CS more seriously for a clan, I would switch to the BW dial up and pay for the privalage of a much lower ping.

I wasnt talking just about cs, all games really have a proportion of idiots, in fact cs no more than any other. BFV in fact out-idiots cs any day.
Its all to do with that thing called ACCESSABILTY.
I suppose.
