I have a Tbird 900, Geforce2 GTS 32MB, 128MB RAM , DX8, SB Live Value soundcard, Cable Modem, Via 4 in 1 (4.28), Nivida 12.40 drivers.

My problem is that when playing Counter Strike I get terrible frames per second. This also goes for HL too.

I play CS at 640x480 and use Opengl mode, I have high quality sounds disabled. When playing my FPS drops well below 60 and in to the 40's. This happens when playing single player HL too. I have Vsync off and set fps_max to 99.

I seem to get decent performance in 3DMark 2001
I get 2890 marks at 1024x768 32bit (default test).
I get 6675 in 3DMark 2000 at default test 1024x768 16bit.

Sisoft Sandra test suggest my processor is working fine too.

I have tried tweaking my geforce settings and I am not using FSAA either.

I have tried all diff versions of geforce2 drivers and I cant solve this problem.

If anyone can help me then please do as I am at my wits end with this anoying problem.

Thanks in advance.

Format the hard drive. Sorry i know this doesn't help. On a bit of a tangent here. When ever i have computer problems and can't work out for the life of me what to do i have a technical help line i can call. Anyone heard of Evesham micros? My computer maker

Normally if i don't know what to do then it is quite a tricky problem. Everytime i have had to call this help line all they can say is format the hard drive!! I must admit it always does the trick but i'm sure with a bit of EFFORT they might have been able to sort things out without having to format.

Give it a while i'm sure some brain box will be able to help you. Wait for Ch3tan he seems to know the answer to all our gaming/computer questions.

I just kill people

I didnt formatt as I dont have all necessary drivers and had tons of patches etc that I had download over the years and no large storage media to save it to.

So I uninstalled as much as I could then I renamed the Programs Files folder then deleted as many files as I could and then went into DOS. I then renamed me windows folder and then reinstalled windows 98 again. This allowed me to get the drivers for network card and cd rom etc from old windows system folder that had been renamed.

Graphics card, direct x, HL, CS etc were all clean installs and that didnt solve.

Mabey not quite as good as a formatt but as close as I could get.

Eeek. Doing what u just did is very bad.

I would have just suggested uninstalling HL, then unistalling your sound and gfx files.

It could be that you have to many detonator files lying around and your pc is mixing them.

Delete all of the gfx drivers change display type to standard vga and start again.

REinstall sound and gfx, then reinstall hl.

Patch it up and then try and play.

Oh, and you only need to post this on ONE forum rather than 2.

It saves all the hassle of being flamed and called unpleasant names.

Now you know better.

- I assume a virus check has been done?

The reason I put it on both was I wasnt sure which board would get the best response. I stuck to the boards which this topic falls within (Gen Help and CS Prob). I am only looking for help not trying to anoy anyone.

I have a very similar system and I get the same FPS fluctuations, even with the GF3 I have now - and I'm very careful about my having clean driver installations, uninstalling all old drivers before installing new ones etc.

I think tbh that it's just a fact of life when it comes to the Half-Life engine - it's outdated and shite and has reached the limits of it's ability to upwardly scale anymore. I could be wrong but at LAN's etc I've watched other people's FPS's and everyone, regardless of system, seems to have similar fluctuations. I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

Well below 60 is v bad, TBH 100fps stable is what you should be getting.

Have you checked if its aproblem with your mobo and OS? ANd if there is a fix for it somewhere?

Why not partition your harddrive if you cant find a solution, move all the data you want to keep over to the new partition then format the old one and do a clean install of windows.

Oh my god, if I get 40fps, Im doin really well. But thats with a pII350 and 56k connected at 40000kbps max (my piece of BT string has to stretch a very long way)

If it was a mobo or system prob would my 3dmark scores and Sisoft Sandra scores not be affected too?

Is my above 3DMark 2001 score ok?

Any info would be appreciated.

I cant agree that 40-60 fps with an 800 mhz processor is "normal"! it's nothing to do with the h-l engine imo.i got a 1gig cpu but a worse vid card than u (gf2mx) i use the drivers that came with the pc - 4.12.01.0532 apparently- and my fps NEVER goes below 60 fps even at 1024 by 768 resolution.
if anyones wondering , i leave v sync on cos i still play a lot of q2 and it gives all sorts of problems if i turn it off :)
Anyway , do u have these fps problems with other games?q3 for instance?that would let u know wether it was a h-l or pc problem?

What a crock of shit. On my Cu Intel Piii 550 @ 800mhz, with a gf2u...I get 100 or 99.9 fps CONSTANTLY. The only thing that slows it down is smoke effects, which drop it to about 80fps. (All at 1024x768)

Get a real fucking cpu sonny

Connection speed has nothing to do with FPS in the half-life engine. You're thinking of quake3

does your screen judder a lot when for example turning a corner to go into a new area, or when people come onto the screen?

Try the 64mb texturing tests in 3dmark, see what score you get.

Someone at work has a similar problem although he has a good system. I suspect it's something to do with AGP - either that or you might have a faulty graphics card. Or motherboard.

If faulty graphics card or motherboard was the problem why would Sisoft Sandra scores been fine and 3DMark2001 scores be fine too?

What makes you think its a mobo or graphics card prob?

Ok I just ran the benchmarks myself and got the following

Using

Timedemo 1
Demo demo127

Normal graphics settings = 106fps
High Quality = 103fps
1024x768 Max Settings (32bit colour and textures, full geometric detail and textures) 69fps.

All test were done with wall marks, dynamic lights etc etc on.

Please post results and let me know if my system is ok.

Thanks.
