cs not laoding first try or at all?

Lots of threads recently about cs not loading properly or slowly. Well after the replies about new modems/ reinstalls and retries I found this today at csnation.

Last night a friend emailed me asking me "My CS loads way too slow, it keeps getting slower and slower until I reinstall it, any ideas?"
To cut a long ramble short he said "One of the files is over 40 meg, it's called custom.hpk.

I took a stab in the dark, and suggested that that might be the custom spray paints from online play, stored in a big file. He deleted custom.hpk and voila. CS loaded up as quick as you like.

Note Valve added a command to do this automatically, check it out:
We've added a new variable, hpk_maxsize, that will allow servers and clients to set the maxsize of the "custom.hpk" file. Once that size has been exceded the file is automatically deleted. The cvar is set for size in megabytes. hpk_maxsize 0, is no maxsize. hpk_maxsize 1.5 is a file maxsize of 1.5 megabytes.

ANd there you go maybe what someof you have a problem with.

dudes there is a command to limit the size of the custom.hpk file, so it can be set at 1k or 10Mb or summat, /me trundles off to find it.

ahh yes here it is: hpk_maxsize "0.2"

I think its in megabytes? or it could be kilobytes, eitherway setting it to 0 should stop custom decals being stored? alternatively you could change cl_allowdownload to "0" which would stop you downloading them in the first place...

Thought U cured my problem of slowww startup, but my custom.hpk file was only 7k - hmmm.

Do u use AOL? do u have a winmodem? Is your isp not AOL but even worse, BT? If u fit any of these u are exempt from partaking in the number online game in the world :/

AOL - no
Winmodem - no
BT - errrr - yes - damn, bugger, fffffffs

BT's been getting a lot worse of late, half the time u get a crap connection and the other half of the time the servers down.

I really hate BT

Cant wait 4 NTL to get in my area, in about 2 years !!!!!! - ahhhh
Besides, I just dont fancy the idea of giving BT any more cash 4 a shite service. So ISDN and ADSL are not options. (ISDN old technology - ADSL like trying to get the Holy Grail, sorry guv there are too many birds standing on you line.)

O well 2 more years of crappy conns.
