CS Crashing

Weird, weird weird!!!

For the last 6 months or so, I've been experiencing in-game crashes (dumped back to Windows) in CS which had no apparent cause (at least nothing repeatable or constant) :(.

My initial thoughts where that some lamer was getting flustered at my triple headshot stint and decided he'd had enough of an a** canning for one night, deciding to nuke me using some "hush-hush" CS cheat I wasn't aware of. I'd tried the CS anti-crash cheat, flashing my BIOS, installing the latest AGP drivers, m/b drivers, even down-clocking my Savage2000 thinking it was a heat issue (even with the fan on it)...nuthin'

After charging into the lead during one game, (rare at that :)), in usual "wicked-round" style, CS decided to give up the ghost and boot me back to Windows. This I decided was the final straw..."Enough!!" I screamed.

A m8 had given me an "old" Gigabyte GA-5AA m/b which we'd had problems with before. And since I'd tried almost everything with my current setup, I decided to get rid of my pcchips m/b and stick in the GA-5AA and hope I could come to some sort of resolution. I'd tried before, but gave up after losing my hair from BSOD's and intermittent stability :(
(which I seem to think was linked to the problem disclosed later in this post..gotcha hooked now eh?? :))

To my amazing surprise, I installed the GA-5AA and I didn't get a single glitch..not a hicup...I thought I'd "stress" the system a bit by playing CS for a few hours, expecting CS to boot me at some random interval, leaving me in total dispair as to what was causing my problem...

nothing...smooth performance and not a single crash....woohoo! :)

since the GA-5AA uses on board USB, and I couldn't find the "expansion card" to plug into the motherboard, I was using my old Logitech Serial mouse. I eventually found the USB thing and plugged it in, allowing me to use my MS Intellimouse Optical..

All hell broke loose..CS went back to it's former stability. On a whim of curiosity, I unplug the Intellimouse and plug the Serial mouse back in : instant, constant stability. I've been playing CS for a week now, and I haven't had a single instance of crashing. With the previous setup, I was getting at least 3 a game. I know it's not a freak stability issue, I've swapped mice (mouses?) round, and I get near instantly observable crashing/stability...

So, the moral of my story is, if you're getting random crashes like the one I've described above, then maybe, juuust *maybe*, it's the mouse (or some other easily replaceable hardware component...)

(I haven't tried the old m/b with the serial mouse...but something tells me it might be ok...ah well..AGP 2x is reason enough to stick with the GA-5AA :))

confucious say : "If CS crash, Intellimouse USB is probably the cause"

Or maybe not...
I run an ms intellimouse (USB) fine and I know many others that do. If CS is crashing, surely other programs are too? Did you check for any irq conflicts, the USB optical mice have known issues with internal modems. Also disbaling the old unused ps2 port (for your mouse) helps USB mouse stability (It was the only issue I ever had). Maybe your drivers were out of date? Basically before you tell one and all that USB was too blame maybe you hsould list some more facts.

facts.

hmmm let's see :

- internal modem - nope
- IRQ/DMA/Mem conflict - nope
- other programs crashing - yes...

Half-life DM also dies when I try and play it..either LAN or 'net based...

- Intellimouse drivers - v3.2
- PS/2 port - haven't tried disabling it...

actually, I was using a USB -> PS/2 converter for the Intellimouse (on the PCCHIPS m/b)...when I installed the GA-5AA I was using straight USB)....it was crashing with both methods....could this be a possible cause?

Please note, I said *maybe* it's the mouse. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slating the Intellimouse, in fact, I think it's one of the best mice (mouse? mouses?) I've ever used, and I'd recommend it to anyone. If your's works...bully for you, I wish mine did work..it's a great mouse for CS and work in general... :(

Just for reference :

- AMD K6/3 450 (running at 100x4.5 2.2V)
- 128MB CAS2 100Mhz SDRAM
- Gigabyte GA-5AA mb w/ 5aa_1f BIOS + ALi IDE + AGP drivers
- Win 98SE w/IOS + USB + shutdown patches installed
- Diamond Viper II (Savage 2000) 5C54 BIOS(?) and god knows which driver I'm currently using, I've tried everything from the retail CD version to the latest beta...
- 3Com 10/100 PCI NIC
- Logitech (woohoo stable CS) mouse
- Big shiny system case

confucious say "If CS crashing (and holds valid drivers license ;), it might be the mouse, but more than likely it's that hot dog you've got jammed in the CPU fan"

hmm..my intelli laser mouse also appears to be fine. First check for conflicts, and get newest drivers for everything.
