Just watched it for the second time. First time was on VCD and this time on DVD (special offer at amazon, a tenner, I *am* Mr Bargain at the moment).

Really didn't get it first time, got distracted by the sillyness of the flying squirrel fights. This time I totally got it.

Fantastic film, just superb, really not sure why I missed it the first time, maybe it just loses a lot on VCD, maybe my mind was in a more receptive state this time, who knows?

I diddnt understand it at all. got as far as when the whole plot about secret training of the girl came out but it was wierd. will make a note to watch it again granny

I have 2 versions of the film on DVD: The original Region 3 Hong Kong release and the newer Region 1 Superbit version.


One of my fave films of all time and I absolutely love the bird Zhang Ziyi to bits.


I have only ever watched it in its original Mandarin (with English subs).

Ono, I've been dying to ask, but civility stopped me from prying before, but to hell with civility... I won't appall you with my geography (since I invented a whole new continent to place Iraq and Iran on), but are you actually (directly or not) from anywhere martial artey? Or are you common or garden english lad who likes manga and martial arts films a lot?



Back on topic, one of my favourite films in this genre ever would have to be Once Upon A Time In China. Fantastic.

Nope, never heard of it, what kind of film is it?

I feel I should add here that I'm a serious non-fan of martial-artsy type films generally, I really don't get a buzz out of them, I like crouching wotsit cos it was about love, pain, loss and wasted years. It made me cry actually.

Once Upon A Time In China...hmm that sounds familiar. Is that a John Woo Hong Kong flick?

I remember an early John Woo film that was epic and loved every minute of it - sure its that one :)

Tsui Hark - he of the trade mark balancing act fight finale :)


Also has Jet Li as the main lead. He does truly reign supreme :) Though, I don't know if anyone else has seen Jet Li's Shaolin Art Of War (I think thats what its called). Its all about Jet Li, and the translating is just... wrong. So totally wrong.

Born in UK, but know Hong Kong just as well as I know London. :p

CTHD is a fantastic film. It's not the easiest of films to like to start with, as it isn't quite what you're expecting, but throughly superb all the same.

Absolutely beautifully shot, too. The film looks stunning (even more so than Ang Lee's normal work - pretty hard to beat), and this would have been nowhere near as impressive on VCD as DVD.

Never, never, never watch foreign films dubbed if it is avoidable. People who persist in watching dubbed versions of films annoy me almost as much as those who complain about the black borders on widescreen films and how "distracting" they are, and persist on nagging you into watching a far inferior pan and scan shite.

Tip:

Get Iron Monkey if you haven't already seen it. It's out on Region 2 DVD in the UK and is up there with CTHD in the fight scene stakes.

Same martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo Ping.

Once upon a time in china is a great film. If you've seen iron monkey you get to see a young Wong Fei Hong (Jet Li) learning his fighting skills from the iron monkey

Just on a simliar (ish) them, by far the best Hong Kong film I saw in 2001 ( I saw CTHD in 2000 :p ) was ....wait for it......


Shaolin Soccer :clap: A classic. Look it up on IMDB if you don't believe me.


Can be obtained on R3 DVD from www.dddhouse.com for the measly price of about £9.

Iron Monkey is fantastic, my fav bit is when the bad guy leaps off the boat and lands in the chair with that evil laughter, sooooooo good.

Legend of Fong Sai Yuk (spelling? Since I can't be arsed to go find the DVD) 1 and 2 are class films as well, the fight scene with his mother on the gallows is top.

I wholly agree, my stepson rented CTHD on DVD a few weeks ago, as I liked it in the cinema I watched a bit but found it somewhat lacking in the dubbed version. My wife wanted to watch it afterwards and insisted I switched into Manderin with English Subtitles, the film was a lot better.

CTHD is one of the few films enjoyed by both my wife and I, surprizingly another one is Sense and Sensibility which is coincidently by the same director !

Personally I thought Iron Monkey was better than CTHD, that could be due to the fact me and Damini were having some massive argument through the middle of CTHD so my memories of it are slightly tainted but I thought Iron Monkey was more my style.

Very cool fight on top of poles. :)

Agreed, absolutley gorgeous and it takes the time to let the camera linger on the scenery just for the sake of it. And you're right, that was totally lost on VCD.

Totally! First thing I did when I put it in the DVD player was switch it onto mandarin audio with english subtitles, I was very glad that option was there :)

Yeah, I can't speak Mandarin.

Cantonese is fine though. :p
