Been a while since I've played thid, it always used to work fine but recently whenever I go there I get serious framelag when first coming across any players - the same kind I'd only get when coming up to a 50+ man zerg in NF. The lag is fine after a while, but after 20-40 minutes the entire screen will go strange colours and it will freeze, crashing the computer. I'm not sure whether this is down to the graphics card or ram, I occasionally get minor graphics artifacts like strange textures which have to be due to the graphics card, but the massive initial 'inc lag' is most likely a ram problem.

I never get any graphics artifacts let alone a total freeze in NF unless the graphics card overheats if it's a very hot day and I've been playing for ages, yet in thid it will consistently happen in well under an hour of playing, any idea what the problem is?

Sounds like a heating problem , might try and clean out ur fans / cpu for dust and see fr improvements.
Artifacts on screen such as the strange colours you mentioned usually appear because of that. Or faulty RAMs.
