Crafting and money

Just wanted to ask how people have managed to get the money together to craft up to 1000+?

My guild is fairly smallish with a few high level characters and I've had a donation to help me along but that ran out fairly quickly. Do you all wait until higher levels so you can fund yourselves from hunting or what?

Can task up to 650. Then its a matter of funding yourself, or asking for contributions from guildies.

If you do fund yourself, you can go farm drops for metals, like Arawnites outside snowdonia drop junk mithril armour, which you can /salvage. Lots of asterite in barrows (30+) and of course salvaging DF items is always good for crafters.

Salvaging is the key to funding yourself though. Salvage everything :)

The higher my crafting skill, the better the salvage?

I salvaged a bow (worn astertite) and got 3 bars from it! Didnt seem much to me.

I think my guild is smaller (6ppl) than yours but it is not a problem. AC till 600 cost me about 700 gp (with a very little salvage) and after it I just used salvaged materials (thanks to my guild again  ) You need a LOADS of item to salvage. I salvaged at least 100 goblin chain + 50 DF items till 900. (Used asterite till 900)

I think your metalcrafting skill what count, but maybe that bow gives you only 3 bars, independents your skill. A plate mail, chain hauberk, two handed sword - always will give you more bars than a bow (mostly if it is a worn one). The best way to farm seals and salvage what you bought for them.

Also I seem to remember last time I crafter (probably in 1.50) I noticed I could craft plate helms for like 10 metal bars, and /salvgae back for 12. This might be a bug, and you might get busted for exploiting. But I do remember buying 100bars, crafting these to powerskill, and ending up with like 300bars. On alloy or greater that makes you shed loads of cash.

Bug might be fixed now though.

Think it's fixed, but you can buy seal armour, salvage it, make trinkets of the metal and sell them for lots of cash. :)

I made my way to 1000+ by tasks, and selling to customers. I've had some financial support, but not the usual plats that guilds pump in.

Which is the best seal armour to buy then? I mean, Ive got some emerald seals so should I buy avernal plate helms or what?

One thing I should mention is that im a fletcher so my metalworking isnt going up - its stuck on 503 now.

Trouble is there arent/dont seem to be many scouts knocking around that want stuff making. I know we can make bolts and arrows for mercs but people use bolts for pulling so dont need that many or high quality.

Guess crafting will have to take a back seat for a few levels till I can afford it!:)

Ok, here goes

I've funded myself through weaponcrafting from 0 to where I am now, the best source of cash by far is your guild, if they are willing to fund you, then suck that cash from them for all you are worth. If however they aren't then you're best off doing consignments until 650 skill, as someone said in a previous post. One thing I would caution you about is, don't leave your secondary skills (metal/leather/wood/cloth) behind your main skill (fletching in your case), since Fletching does other things apart from bows and arrows, you'll need to get all your secondaries up to your main, since I'm sure minstrels/friars would appreciate high quality high level items made, this may mean you sitting about doing trinkets but there we go.

As for generating cash on your own, best source is DF by far, if you can get sapphire/diamond seals. As Danyan said, you can salvage and trinket the metal you get from the stuff you buy, I'd recommend getting plate helms, they give a good amount of metal per helm, the metal you get is asterite from sapphire/diamond stuff and adamantium from emerald stuff.

As for the worn bow, you're better off selling it, since it's worn there is little metal content in it and you'll get more money for selling.

The best way to get metal, leather and cloth up is by making studded armour with tailoring or armourcraft.............relatively cheap and quick.

If you have 700+ metal working then the best things to buy are...

emeralds seals = 2H great hammer (gives asterite)

Sapphire seals = 2h hammer or 2h sword

Diamonds = Plate helmet ( or if your willing to try it and know how plate BP)

Also listen to Krait.

Many times i have seen people trying to raise secondary stats by making trinkets. This is a total waste imo.

Use tailoring or armorcrafting to raise metal working ..or if you are either of these tradesthen use weaponcrafting to raise metal. If you make maces and hammers you can raise woodworking too.

even if you make a bronze dagger your metalworking will raise. Say you are at 500 metal from fletching and make a bronze dagger. You should get to 1 point in weapons 501 in metal and some in leather too.

i sponsored a crafter for around 5 plats.
You can make a plat a day easily in DF by just farming rocots
in 1 day you got like 1 plat and 350 emralds which sell nicely to the lower levels for 1 - 2 gp a piece

18 diamond seals give you about 270 gold when salvaged and trinketed

i managed to make about 8-10 plat by just leveling a level 50

That just makes me envious!!!

Thanks everyone else for the advice - I must admit I have been making trinkets lately a) they seem to be cheaper cause I sell back for nearly the full price; b) I can make them while Im sitting around regaining endurance:)

Did I get this right nick - My weaponcrafting is 1, metal 503 and leather 421. I make the lowest dagger (bronze?). I can gain in all three skills because my primary (weaponcrafting in this case) is low? Sounds good if thats the case:)

I would also say raise secondaries from another craft type, but I'd say trinket to get all your secondaries at the same level first, so when you want to raise them from doing say armor or weapons, they will all go up together rather than have one behind others, alot less fuss that way. May cost you some cash now, but it'll save you money when you are doing high end stuff, where if you funding yourself, every gold piece counts. ;)
