If anyone has an SB card and gets crackley sound on it as if the needles skipping on the record or something check the following...
Are you using the official SB drivers or the ones from the windows update site?
I ask because AGES ago I had this crackley sound problem and lived with it, thinking it was just a crap card (SB Live! Value).
then I upgraded to windows XP and the crackling stopped. I didn't question why.
Then about a month or so ago someone said that putting the official SB drivers on can get rid of the strange lag problems people were having in BF1942. So I tried it. Didn't seem to make a difference. I then started to notice while playing my MP3's again that the crackling had come back.
I didn't immediately link the two but last night I thought "what the hell" and used XP's driver Roll-Back function on the SB drivers.
Rebooted and loaded up winamp. Crackling all gone!
I don't know what other SB soundcards this may affect but if you do get this odd craclking noise then it's worth actually trying the MS drivers from the windows update site.
