Hello :)

I believe the AthlonXP 2000+ is clocked at ~1.67Ghz.

As for Intel's chips, I think its safe to say that they still have the edge at the top end of the market. Although marginally behind the 3200+ Barton right now, Intel's kit is still an extremely strong performer, and when the 3.2Ghz Pentium 4C is released later this month, complete with hyperthreading and 800Mhz FSB support, Intel will once again snatch the lead from AMD. Across the range, Intel's products are good performers, and are known for their quality and reliability.

However, in the real world, there are many other pressing concerns. Firstly, price. AMD chips are amazing value for money considering what you're getting, and Intel's product lineup cannot help but seem expensive in comparison. Secondly, like for like performance comparisons between Intel and AMD usually put AMD ahead in many tests, apart from those in which Intel have traditionally been strong in.

Given the choice, if price were not an issue, I think I'd have to choose Intel over AMD. That said, price is rarely not an issue, and when you can pick up a 2500+ Barton for £71, it's not surprising many people are choosing to go with AMD over Intel.

Kind Regards

The current Intel P4 chips OC pretty well. You can get the 2.2 up to 3.3 gig pretty easily, obviously you're paying a bit more for the privaledge but you can't get an AMD that will run at that clock speed yet.

Just a quick question...is the xp2500 barton worth getting just for the extra cache, for gaming performance. I am running about xp2600+ at the moment ... I don't want the higher barton models , as they probably have high locked multipliers, which isn't good for overclocking..Thanks

I believe this issue was discussed before, so I'll try and dig out the thread for you :) From what I recall, in a shootout between the 2500+ Barton (£71?!) and a ~2600+ Thoroughbred, it seems the Barton would come out on top, even if it wasn't by an astonishing amount. I doubt it would be worth upgrading considering your current kit, though.

Kind Regards

Very true :) I believe this is [H]ard|OCP territory too, as they've been known to run a Pentium 4 3.06Ghz at 4.44Ghz :) An expensive pastime :D

The lights in the whole street must go dim when that sucker gets turned on :)

Embattle, have you still got that water cooled doodad you used to have? How quiet was it?

Watercooling is very quiet, just a tiny hum from the pump. However this is normally covered by the noise of HDs, which are normally one of the loudest things in PCs.
