CPU temp?

My Athlon 900 is running at 58.5 deg according to Sandra.

This seems high. Is it?

I've had a couple of occasions in the last week or so where the PC has just reset itself. Could it be down to that?

A little high but OK tbh :) Dont think it would cause a reset, unless your Bios was set to turn off at that temp!

Well, not really. It has been on for about 2 hours polling for my emails - that's it!

I may do that thing you were on about and get compressed air can to blow the dust off the components. It's got about 2 year's worth of shit inside.

Hi Emb

Where can I get thermal compound from (cheap p&p) & compressed air ?

My system generally clean, but theres alot of dust in the northbridge hs under the fan in my kt7a.

Thanks

Whereas Intel processors generate anti-heat which keeps the room cool all year round.

What is the ambient temperature ? The only time you should be worried is when it runs hot when everythign around it is cool, at this time of year in this weather you'd expect CPUs to run anything up to 10 deg higher.

My PC system (AMD 1.3Ghz) is in the loft, which is like a sauna, and it runs 24/7, and I'm sure it gets much higher than 58 deg !

Just got home and checked for you, ambient is around 39 deg and CPU is running at 59 deg in idle, now breaking 60 deg easy :)

My Duron 850 registers 42 C in the bois & 32 C in sandra :/

How do test between idle & load ?

For "loaded" I just run up a few games of Quake or Unreal Tourney, after about 30 minutes its cooking nicely :)

As I was saying, evening wears on, ambient is down to 36 deg and CPU down to 56 deg, see what I mean ?

My T-bird 1.3ghz has never got over 25 degrees C according to Sandra.

Think the thermometer is working right?

Just had a read of the FAQ of sandra, which says cpu temp is based on a asus m/b and the bios reading is likely to be more accurate if you have another m/b.

By 'ambient' I presume you mean system temp, then my ambient is 30 C :)

Btw After doing some sandra benches & a few loops of 3d mark 2001, my cpu goes up to 42 C, idle is about 36C.

I suppose load temps are more important,
Who wants a ( Idle cpu  )

Motherboard readings are never accurate even now let alone on older mobos.

By "ambient" I mean room temperature where the PC is located.

Get the compressed air from a PC World, not that much normally.

I got that a week ago, put it on for the first time on my new Chip, i pressed it gently, but nowt come out.. so i squeezed it a bit more... still nothin, then i just sqeezed hard and i shit mehself when all the compound went all over the place, a bit went on the Chip itself (not the silver bit) but i just left it.. then came the annoying task of installing the CPU Fan... talk about sore thumbs

it is a annoying task.. DOH! you're supposed to get 30 applications out of the tube

make sure you clean some off or too much could act as an insulator rather than a conductor..
