I have a Gbyte b360hd3 motherboard with an i5-8600 CPU, it runs most new games ok, but I was wondering if I could upgrade the CPU to something a bit faster. It's a socket 1151 motherboard and you can't really buy those CPUs new any more, so it'd be second hand.

Is it worth it? Current CPU utilisation while playing modern games is 100%. I should upgrade the MB and CPU together really, but I have other demands on my money this year, so would like to eke out another year with this PC. I have an AMD RX7600 GPU. I'd particularly like recommendations from companies that sell second hand CPUs that can be relied upon.

Chances are that CPU is bottle necking your GPU heavily. I don't know of any second hand sellers beyond eBay (which I wouldn't trust personally), your other option is to try find a bundle deal with both CPU and Motherboard included.

If you poke around Amazon you could probably find a reasonable priced CPU/Motherboard/Ram deal.

Tom old chap, that motherboard was never intended for high tier CPUs, it's a midrange board at best. Even if you'd go for a 9900K, the VRMs won't deal with it and you'll run into throttling.

Layman's term, mobo can't provide sufficient juice to more powerful 9th gen intel cpus.

Give it another designation and refresh with newer, more capable hardware.
