just put a machine together but was a bit concerned about how i applied the thermal compound etc.

So i've been tryin to keep an eye on the operating temp just to make sure its coping ok, but i'm not sure whats a safe temp for the processor to be running at.

Any suggestions?

No, but on the same line what is the operating temp of a P4 1.90ghz

I built mine but couldn't be bothered with arctic silver and used the standard stuff getting temp of upto 48 on MBM5

Thanks

try to keep your chips under 60C, that's a fair safety margin for any processor - the byword isn't 'what can I get away with' - you should be trying to keep it as cool as possible without resorting to watercooling or ending up deaf due to loud deltas ;)

I think it was Itchy who originally posted this little gem:
Idle Temperatures
< 20 C: Who the heck are you and what are you using? Liquid N2?
20-35 C: Normal and acceptable for high end aircooling
35-45 C: Getting a little on the sweaty side of normal, but par for typical generic aircooling solutions.
45-55 C: You're definitely doing something wrong, especially if you've got a nice high end heatsink. Look into it.
> 55 C: You've got serious problems.....

Load temperatures
< 30 C: You're working magic
30-45 C: Good Job. You're normal and very safe
45-55 C: A mite high, but normal for low end/generic aircooling. You might experience an occaisional lockup or two but you're still OK for the most part.
> 55+ C: You're going to be experiencing frequent lockups and other problems. Look in to nicer cooling solutions or take that overclock down.
Dunno how accurate it is, though. You just can't trust that lad. :/

Aye, that was my handiwork. The temperatures are probably a little on the safe side, I certainly run a fair bit hotter than that with no problems.

In fact, I'm currently running at 58C, with a nice, stable system.

Heh, I forgot the layer of salsa under it to help the thermal transfer.

To be honest, I'm running a Duron 800 constantly at full load, with a generic heatsink and no thermal compound. It doesn't lock up, ever (not since I sorted out the gfx overheating ;)) so I've just left it.
